Lunesta.....bad taste....anyone else?

Posted by blondemomints on April 20, 2005, at 10:48:08

OMG, I was soooo looking forward to Lunesta. Sounded like the "miracle sleeping pill" no long term contraindications, etc. What a let down for me personally. I took my first 3mg and within 15 minutes, I had the worst taste in my mouth I had ever tasted. I couldn't get rid of the taste!

The next day I was still tasting it and my eyes were extremely dry feeling.

But the taste was horrific! I brused my teeth, I used mouthwash, everything I could think of immediately and nothing helped.

Anyone else have same experience? Advice? Am I alone with the bad taste thing (my luck!)

Thanks for any input!

Hi- The bad taste from Lunesta is very common according to what I have read. I get it too, but it doesn't really bother me. It lastes all day, but it is not too bad. I only take 2 mg.

But I have read from others that it does bother them.

I has been working very well for me.

Hi Bill, I've eagerly been waiting lunesta too - my fear it is that it might have cross tolerance with benzodiazepines, I have taken 3 mg Clonazepma, (klonopin) for years - you don't take any benzo's by any chance

I'm sorry to hear that you had such an unpleasant taste reaction. For me, it's a light metallic taste, it's actually kinda an indication of when the medication is starting to work at all because Lunesta is much more subtle of a medication than Ambien in my body. So far it hasn't bothered me too much, but it is a little odd, and seems to be one of the most common side effects.

> The next day I was still tasting it and my eyes were extremely dry feeling.

For me, the taste lasted only for the duration of the medication's onset; but I guess from other reports this also is varying :/

This is EXTREMLY common with zopiclone so my guess is that it's exactly the same with eszopiclone. I get this also(on zopiclone), but i dont feel the taste until the next day and it doesn't bother me very much luckily.

I started with 3 mg and within 10 minutes I got that bad taste, but it subsided.

This is regard to the Lunesta Message:
I aso get a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE taste in my mouth, water doesn't taste good, even aything flavored (like Koll-Aid) It just makes it taste worse (I've found that gum has really, really helped, which is just a suggestion) now, my problem: I need to ask anyone and ANYONE who is or had taken it (Lunesta). It only lets me sleep for 2-3 hours at a time, has anyone else experienced that???My pain management doctor gave me a handfull of the 3mg samples, and told me to take 1, and if that doesn't work, then take 2 :o( Has anyone EVER had this before? And has anyony experienced the SAME EXACT problem...Any info would be greatly apperciated........Thank you

I would maybe try switching to the 2mg strength, 3mg's was too strong for me, and when I switched to the lower strength the "funky" taste also subsisded. Life is so different when you are actually sleeping!!!! :)

took at 2 mg, taste wasn't big deal & subsided within 30 minutes.

took hrs to get to sleep, then woke up every other hour, with difficulty getting back to sleep each time. what a dud. my doc say it's not been effective for one single patient he's prescribed it to, in any of the strengths. i threw mine out. also rebound insomnia, even tho it never worked in the 1st place.

Yea, there were a large numer of entries complaining about the horrible and residual taste, but many others, as well as my previous post, seemed to have disappeared.

Neither Milk or water can reduce the pugnant taste left in the month

Originally Lunesta reported somewhere around 37% of participants reported a badtaste.

I just looked at there site a second time and the percentages seem to be much lower.

Hmmm, I wonder if that would effect it's efficacy or make it worse. I don't where it needs to be absorbed to work the best. Do you Phillipa? Would it slow does its aborption?

I don't know. If it was a vitamin capsule wouldn't it be absorbed in the stomach? That would be like lunesta wouldn't it? I guess ask a pharmacist or one of our med experts. Fondly, Phillipa

I think the taste comes from the drug in systemic blood concentrations. I've tried washing the pill down with so much other water and food that I'm sure it didn't come in contact with my tongue. Each time I notice the onset of the taste as it is absorbed into the bloodstream. So now I guess the question is what can we take that will mask the taste when applied to the tongue because if you stop it from systemicly going to the tongue then the drug probably won't be theraputic.

I switched from Ambien to Lunesta, caught up in the hype of a better sleeper that doesn't cause tolerance. Bull. Can't fall asleep on even 3mg and the taste - ugh. Metal bitter, especially when I wake up. And waking up is HARD. I'm going back to Ambien 10mg. Wish it wasn't so durned expensive.

I went back to 20mg Ambien as a trial and I may stay back there. Lunesta, ignoring its taste problems, doesn't set in quick enough. I don't have any problems with either medication not fulfilling 8-9 hours but that's probably due to the heavy amount of H1 and minor A2 component of Seroquel I take at the same time.

HERE IS WHAT YOU DO!!!!!!!!!!

Before taking the Lunesta go to your refrigerator. Grab the chocolate .. (Use the rich milk chocolate that you put on ice cream) Squirt about 2-3 tablespoons of it in your mouth. Pop the Lunesta pill in with the mouth full of chocolate and swallow. This has worked for me EVERY TIME I use this technique to keep that aftertaste away..

Yeah chocolate syrup isn't technically "healthy" for some of you weight watches out there, but would you rather do that once a night, or have nasty tasting drinks and food for days on end.

I can't believe Lunesta is still on the market and that people actually take it! I took 1. The taste immediately followed about 15 minutes later once it hit my stomach. Not only could I taste it all day long, but I could smell it when I breathed. I seriously thought about purging just to get this metallic thing out of my system. Here I am 20 hours later and the taste is almost gone, thank GOD! I couldn't toss those samples into the trash fast enough!

Great idea and guess what? As long as it's not sugary (the darker the better), chocolate is actually healthy and even assists in weight loss! It's a great source of MUFA's (mono-unsaturated fatty acids), the big buzz in weight loss these days. Of course, the chocolate shouldn't be in the form of, say, an entire pint of Haagen Daz or a box of Godiva fudge truffles.

Other sources are almonds, olives, avocados, coconuts, macadamia nuts and other monounsaturated nuts, seeds and oils. Somehow I don't think any of these others would dent that nasty penny and pencil shavings Lunesta aftertaste, though.

I read about the 'Flat-belly diet' in last month's Prevention magazine. Check out this video:

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4074703

Here's the website at prevention.com:

I ditched Lunesta long ago but can't wait to lose some belly jiggles while enjoying more chocolate!

I had the same problem with Lunesta's taste. It's gawdawful. I bought 100 size "0" empty gel capsules on eBay for little or nothing. Pop the little pill inside the capsule, swallow with water. Voile' No aftertaste.
