Sleep aides - what are people using?

Posted by TamaraJ on June 18, 2005, at 16:04:13

Just wanted to know what people are using for insomnia, besides Ambien, sonata and lunesta. A family member is experiencing insomnia and is looking for an effective aide, that won't know him out for 12 hours, but keeps him asleep for more than 3 or 4.

So, what do people here like?

Thanks.

Tamara

Well other than sex like was mentioned, ROFL,

I have been using Restoril. It works well for me but am weaning myself off of it now since it's been 4 months.

I was on 30 mg's and am down to 10 mg's. Next week I will go down to 5 mg's and by the end of July, my goal is to be completely off of all medication.

Tamara & All PB,

Sleep disturbances used to be a BIG problem for me; trouble getting to sleep and/or waking up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep. But these sleep problems have been fixed for more than a year. 300 mg of Trileptal (I'm BP II) at bedtime is a good sleep aid and 750 mg of magnesium at bedtime is an excellent sleep aid. Use a good chelated form of magnesium (e.g.; mg malate, mg citrate, mg glycinate, etc).

-- Ron

BP II and OCPD

600 mg/day Lithobid

900 mg/day Trileptal

50 mg/day Lamictal

5 mg/day Deprenyl (as tx for atypical depression)

I take ambien and it works nicely. I suspect that it isn't as effective as it once was for me, (I've been taking it for a while) but it is still is pretty good. I fall asleep quickly and have a peaceful sleep. What a great invention!! :)

Hi Tamara,

I use Ambien, but I've also taken Benedryl and Valerian (herb), which are also helpful.

Good luck,
Jazzy

Restoril 30mg
Lorazepam 2mg - if needed.

Restoril works sort of like natural sleep. It slowly comes over and calms.

BUT.... my body still has its resistant defense, i start with 1mg of Lorazpam if im not down in 1-2hours, if im nuerotic, just 2mg straight.

Thats all.

15mg ambien. but i can wake up in the middle of the night hungry.

restoril works well, too.

eating carbs before bed also helps.

though i don't promote it as a long term answer, one beer before bed gives me a restful night's sleep (even though alcohol, in general, is supposed to not give you good sleep.)
