Hi,
I've been taking 300 mg trazodone for about three weeks. I'm beginning to lose hope on this drug.
Firstly, I have reacted very badly to a variety of drugs. The list of things I can try now is very short. After the traz, all that's left are MAOIs and my pdoc doesn't want to presribe them.
I take it at night. I can't get past 300 mg. Any more and I get sick. Right now I sleep for 10-12 hours. I get nauseous when I take it. I've always had a hard time falling asleep and waking up but now it's worse.
I don't know what to do.

Trazodone is a weak antidepressant and a horrid drug to take. I hated every minute of being on it; I felt completely disconnected from life so long as it was in my body.
Please, find a doctor that will prescribe the MAOIs. I know it's hard, but it will be worth your while. There is no reason you should suffer like this. Be adamant with your doctor that you feel HORRIBLE and that you are tired of the med-go-round. Of course, I had an idiot doctor once who would've rather wasted years of my time trying every combination of antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and SSRIs/TCAs/Remeron/trazodone to no avail rather than prescribe an MAOI. IT makes me sick.

yeah, I'm like chairman MAO, I hate Trazadone because I feel worse the next day whenever I took it for sleep, especially when I took the dose of effexor the next day, I just became irritable as hell as if my brain just desperately wanted to go into turn off sleep mode for the entire day and just retire from the world.
I take Hydroxyzine (Atarax) now for sleep and my quality of life is much better, also because I got off the effexor and switched to Lexapro

I didn't like traz at all.
I wonder if you've gone the ssri+antipsychotic combination route. Prozac + zyprexa, zoloft with any of the atypicals. Those combinations really can work strongly on all kinds of psychiatric conditions. But maybe you've already tried. Don't know. Just a thought.
In any case, traz is obviously not doing the job for you. If it were me, I would begin tapering off of it.

I believe in my first search for an Maoi which mind you cost me 150 bucks in cash up front(no insurance at the time) the docs exact words were "its not in the patients best interest to prescribe maois,we dont use em) and sent me off with wow i cant believe it to this day,a buspar/lihtium combo,so i paid 150 for that. For me it took a wonderful very mature in age woman docter who remebered when they were a standerd, after hearing no from 4 docs it was a relief to hear her say oh yeah parnate yeah i used to have good success with that.
She said if would take a certain type of paitent for her to prescribe that now,she took a chance with me,when i asked her why when it can help so many.....she said something that unlike the other docters who gava a bunch of bs,she simply said william my insurance rates are already sky high i simply dont trust or believe patients will take enough care with them, unlike the other docters her anser sounded very sincere.
Point of all that is,chairman i think it might be a bit harder for some to get maois than one would think, have a personal friend now bluntly refused it,no way no how she was told.

I'm glad I was afraid to try it when the doctor prescribed it for me. Fondly, Phillipa

Thanks everyone for your responses.
still not sure what I'll do. I knew it was a crappy AD but worth a try. I can't tolerate SSRIs, I've had five of them. I do take Zyprexa, which helps a little with some issues.

Hi:
Like you, ... I am NOT able tolerate any of SSRIs, then first was rx'ed Serzone/Nefadozone. After having a bad 'concentration' along with 'energy' issues, my pdoc. added Wellbutrin SR, started out on 150 mg. and moved up the 300 mg. However, for some reason, the effectiveness of Serzone/Nefadozone ceased after more than 3 years. The pdoc. rx'ed Trazodone for its replacement, 300 mg.. However, this 'mass dosage, I knew I never got up next morning, then I went on my own way, ... from 50 mg. to 225 mg. and stay this 'same' dosage for the past eight months or so.For me, Trazodone and WB combo. for a depressive side of Bipolar II has been working REALLY well. I've also been on Zyprexa 5 mg. and Lithium 900 mg. in conjuction with those 'two' ADs. Everyone seems NOT prefer to take the Trazodone, except 'sleep' aid, however I love this med., Trazodone.
One suggesion/advice for you, ... probably, you may need a 'booster' med. for Trazodone, since this med. is one of 'older' and 'weaker' ADs, as others mentioned, above. In my case, three other meds., Zyprexa, Lithium and plus WB sr all seems 'big' helper to the Trazodone. I, too agree Trazodone alone does NOT work on depression. Needs other 'bosster' med./meds. in order to get 'desirable' efficacy.
H.G.
