I was taking klonopin along with 40 mg Parnate. Klonopin was replaced by Tranxene 10 mg. This gave me less depression. During last 3 weeks I reduced Parnate to 20 mg. I have more energy, no anxiety, no hypersomnia. What the hell is it? Do you know effective dosage for Parnate? Maybe I don't need drugs at all? Any suggestions?

Klonopin does cause depression in some people. Is that the first med you started?
As for dosage everyone is different. I need 80-100 mg of Parnate.
Why don't you stop the Parnate and see what happens? Or drop down to 10 mg? Experiment.
Good luck!

Hi Maxime,
I have been on two benzos so far and plenty of antydepressants (SSRI, TCA, finally MAOI).
I suffer from chronic dysthymia/atypical depression with great anxiety.
Parnate is the only med which has been helpful for depression and anxiety. However, 40 mg seems to be too much (anxiety increased). Klonopin makes me more depressed.
I have also tried concerta for hypersomnia associated with depression which came back while on Klonopin. It made me down even more.
I think the next med worth to try is Nardil. But it requires a lot of effort to get MAOI to the place I live.
Thanks for interest.

If you're feeling OK on this combo, at these dosages, then you should leave well enough alone for now. It sounds to me like you definitely need an AD., but don't switch to Nardil if the Parnate seems to be helpful. You're one of the lucky ones who does OK on a low dose of (my maintenance dose is usually 30 mg./day). I have major depression w/severe anxiety, all in remission, and am taking Parnate for 20 years. I did well with Klonopin as an adjunct for sleep, but everyone is different. Again, I think you should give the low dose Parnate/tranxene some time before experimenting with anything else. Good luck. cubbybear

I have also history of major depression. But the background is anxiety/dysthymia/atypical depression/anxious depression/"leaden paralysis", now in reemission. Parnate is wonderful for me, have done a great job. I am just thinking that amfetamine metabilites of Parnate cause some remaining anxiety/muscle tensions.
Nardil has additional calming properties but I am not sure whether it won't shut down my psycho-motor drive which now is OK. I will stay with Parnate, maybe reduce dosage further and see. It would be pity to see 10 years later that Nardil was a perfect drug. One solved key is that I must stay with MAOI. I think it is a great progress in my investigation (fighting with depression from 2000).
Those who are/were on Nardil and have similar profile, please share your experiences with Nardil
Thanks

I think post above was right on the money,if its working try to see how well it is,and ride it.Not too many people ever even get to where you are now.I would really evalute the level of progress parnate is providing you before you opt to change to nardil.....yes it can end up working better,HOWEVER i learned one thing, just because in theory it sounds better due to its gaba enhancing effect,i found it to bring no relief at all,and worsen my anxiety and depression.
This is just a prime example of how much individuality comes into play, and how careful one needs to be in using personal exper of others to aid in their own.
Personaly id stick with the orignal posters response, and take comfort you have a plan B in the wings.

Thanks,
Yes, I am going to stay with Parnate after comments above. The next think is to try reducing tranxene.

I would say it has relatively pure anxiolytic properties, long acting, no highs, no lows, no hypnotic.
Drowsiness is a major side effect at the beginning, seems to dimnish later. My feeling is that it should be taken bid though it has a long half life.
Klonopin was very promising at the start. Tranxene seems to have stable effect. I think it is quite popular in Europe, not in the US.
Some say it is easy to withdraw.

I tried only Tranxene and Klonopin, so I can compare these two drugs only.
