Hey! Has anyone tried this drug? (Miltown/Equanil, AKA meprobamate). Everything I've read about it says it was a big deal in the 50's-Miltown parties, the works- and then the benzos did it in, but it seems like its still prescribed a good bit. I've done the benzo thing (Librium, Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax), so this med kind of piques my interest. Plus, its also a muscle-relaxer (soma actually breaks down into meprobamate), which seems like it could be good for the physical side of tension...plus, one report I read said that it has effects on a multiplicity of brain areas. Any experiences, thoughts, etc.? Its schedule IV controlled-substance, just like all the benzos (except Rohypnol), so it mustn't be too addictive.

Guess what! It was still around in the 70's when I had my first panic attack. What worked for me was valium 5mg three times a day, and meprobamate 450mg once a day. I gave up the meprobamate by myself once my anxiety was under control. I don't remember how long it took. But, no side effects, and I felt great. Took care of 3 young children, volunteered in the schools, etc. And no, I wasn't "high" . I just felt good. Also drank alcohol when I wanted to which was probably on the weekends. Fondly, Phillipa
PS I want my meprobamate back! Then I can give up the SSRI's!

That sounds GREAT! I like the benzos, don't get me wrong...I just would like to try something else for once, you know? And since there's no way I'd ever want to take a barbiturate, and even less of a chance of a shrink ever prescribing one, except maybe phenobarbital, I figure meprobamate is the major alternative. Glad you had a good experience!

I have been taking 350mg Soma along with one or 1-1/2 Hydrocodone 5/500 for Fibromyalgia since last October. Not every single day, but more often than not, depending on how crappy I feel; and since that time, I have noticed that my mood has so much improved that I have been able to phase out my mood stabilizer. I haven't felt any need to increase the amount of either; but will, of course, keep an eye on that, along with my dispensing docs.
An interesting note: My Rheumatologist (Fibromyalgia doc) would give me all the Ultram and Soma (which, as noted, metabolizes as meprobamate) I wanted, but would not dispense Lortab, which is the only med that left me pain free yet functional and unfuzzy, as I discovered following an injury. I told her that I didn't want any Ultram, but she still treated me as "drug seeking" because I asked for Lortab and sent me to a Physiatrist as my last resort. Actually, she all but called me a junky to my face, which was surreal. She was forcing Ultram on me, I was saying, No, I'd rather take nothing, and I'm a junky?
Anyway, the Physiatrist turned out to be a lovely man who treated me respectfully and said that, considering my surgical history and physical condition that I had a legitimate need for the Lortab and he was happy I'd found something that worked for me. So luckily, I'm getting the added AD benefits from the Hydrocodone without having to convince a pdoc for a trial. The funny thing is that the Physiatrist said that he wouldn't give Soma to his patients because he considers it to be a dangerous drug! I guess they've all got their quirks; but between two specialists on the payroll, I have a combination that's actually working for me physically and otherwise...for now, anyway.

I've heard articles of, well from the posts from doctor Bob, that it causes depression. Others euphoria, which holds doctors back from prescribing it.
Either wise i think its obselete. From what i've researched it's effects are similar to a immiediate-acting barbiturate, with less sedation.
I've taken Amytal (amobarbital) 60mg capsule for anxiety from dexedrine at one time, low dose. Nothing to it, boring, feel slothy without the dexedrine. Amobarbital is a immitermidate acting barb. (4-6hours)
Just some source.

Three things:
a) It IS still around
b) It as addicting as hell.
c) DO NOT PUT THAT CRAP IN YOUR BODY/BRAIN!

I gave it up on my own when I no longer needed it. For me, in my ignorance, it was not addicting. I didn't know anything about addiction at the time, so I just stopped it. I guess I was lucky! Fondly, Phillipa

Really? I didn't the docs were using it anymore is it for high anxiety panic attacks thats what I took it for at 450mg with 5mg of valium three times a day and it worked very well. I hope it works the way it did for me. Wish I had some now as a matter of fact as I'm on valium but it's not the same. Love Phillipa
