Hi,
I think I'm doing to ask my pdoc if I can begin metyrapone this monday... check out pubmed, there has been 2 large add-ons studies with it resulting in success... i will probably try it alone, but a study with metyrapone alone for depression used some hydrocortisone... I'm not quite sure what the hydrocortisone was used, I assume its to maintain cortisol levels.. any opinions?

I brought up metyrapone to my doctor at my last visit. He seemed receptive, and he will probably do some homework on it before I see him next. I saw the study in which the hydrocortisone was used to offset the metyrapone. It sounded like a good idea. I'm really not sure because I don't have any data to compare it to. I just don't know if it is necessary. I guess I don't want to be bothered with it. If you recall, some of the studies used a combination of metyrapone and another cortisol synthesis inhibitor. There has been a lot of work done with ketoconazole. Is there any reason why you are not going to try it first?I didn't think one could buy metyrapone from a pharmacy in the amount necessary to use it therapeutically in the US. How are you going to get it?

Hi SLS,
I already tried ketoconazole but only for a very short period of time... I hope its not difficult to get metyrapone at a good dose, but I dont think it'll be a significant problem.. one can always place an order with a big hospital pharmacy and it'll be ther in a day or two.. I'm in canada as well, not that i believe that'll make a difference here... anywayz, id like to try because of the last two big studies that recently came out at the end of 2004...

Metyrapone is NOT available in the US. My doctor read the studies that came out as well and had to eventually call Novartis to try and get the drug to no avail. They ONLY give it out to those with Cushing's Disease and otherwise do not sell or market it.
This sucks of course because of the studies being published. The med has been around since 1961.
Good luck
Jerry
