How come I never had a response to Wellbutrin

Posted by Eljakeo25 on November 2, 2004, at 18:31:07

It seems like I have a response towards the Provigil, adderall, and Cymbalta which they all effect dopamine and noreprephrine in some way, but wellbutrin never did anything for me even at 450 mg.

Maybe you were an ultra-fast metabolizer of whatever enzymes break wellbutrin down? That is somewhat strange, and although I've never taken WB, it seems to have vastly different effects to different people, kinda like other AD's only more so. Many people panic on it, others have palpitation, some have anxiety, and I just read a double-blind placebo controlled study that showed a statistical significance in patients with panic disorder who were helped tremendously by Wellbutrin. Now that IS strange I thought.

Different Strokes for Different Folks, I guess.

A long shot.. but I read somewhere that Wellbutrin or one of its metabolites *inhibits* dopamine *release*. That might be way off-but read it here before. I do know that when I take it I'm craving caffeine for some reason.

I never got any sugar cravings while taking it. It pretty much had a general appetite suppression effect-but definitely wanted to drink coffee all the time. I noticed sugar/carb cravings while taking Zoloft.

Thanks Ritch (nm)

Hey Mitch ... Does the metabolites of wellbutrin have strong norepiphrine and dopamine reuptake properties? I too have read that the parent compound does little reuptake and actually inhibits dopamine in part of the brain. But the active metabolites supply the medication its efficacy.

I don't know about what they actually are *doing* for sure (the parent and the metabolites), but I do know that when I start taking WB I seem to get a clear improvement in energy levels and don't feel very anxious at all. But after a few days/weeks anxiety begins to build up. So, in my case it seems the parent compound seems to be beneficial, while the metabolites appear to be troublesome.

What is interesting is that Provigil and obviously adderall increase my energy levels and motivation. Cymbalta increases norep. and probably helps too. There are no feelings of energy or anti depressant effect of wellbutrin. Maybe it is just not hitting the right dopamergenic areas of my brain.

I've been taking 300mg Wellbutrin SR (sometimes 450mg) for several months. By itself, Wellbutrin does jack-diddly-squat for me. I might as well take sugar pills. However, my pdoc tells me that Wellbutrin has a synergistic effect on SSRI and SNRI antidepressants. There may be something to it, because I did get a little relief when I started taking the Wellbutrin with Zoloft (and later with Cymbalta).

Oh, and another thing...NEVER cut the XR version of Wellbutrin in half (it's okay with regular and SR Wellbutrin). Doing so disables the time release and you end up getting a sudden massive dose of the drug in your system. It freaked me out so bad that I thought I was going to have a seizure or die.
