paxil/ lexapro withdrawal...

Posted by shadowmon on June 2, 2004, at 2:44:22

I just tried for the 4th time to get off of paxil. With the dr's support I tried to whittle down and got all the way to 5 mgs then when I hit 0, all heck broke loose. I couldn't eat, sleep, take care of myself, much less function at all I had panic attacks that came when I slept I just couldnt deal with it. I ended up having the dr put me on (yet) another ssri, Lexapro.
Anyohw, my question is this. Do (or can) Dr's put their patients in the hospital to gome off these drugs? I don't think that I am able to come off it unless I am under more than outpatient care. Or are people like me just stuck taking these meds forever?

thanks in advance

SSRI withdrawal in the hospital?

Posted by shadowmon on June 2, 2004, at 3:05:52

Is there such a thing as inpatient SSRI withdrawal? Like Rehab? I just made the switch from paxil (evil) to lexapro. (unknown).I was trying to get off the meds which were prescribed for me during a traumatic divorce. I didnt really want to go back on another SSRI, but I couldnt handle the Withdrawals.. I lasted about 10 days and it was horrible. I couldnt care for myself and could not function I barely even ate.

I dont want to be on SSRI's forever, but I cant seem to even get over the hurdle of getting off of them to work on them or to see if I am still depressed and anxious. so at least I know for myself if I really need them or if I don't.

It seems like a vicious cycle, you're sick you take the meds, you get better, but the meds won't let you go off of them because they make you feel sicker than you felt before you took them.

Try taking Prozac for a few weeks during and after complete withdrawal. This works for people getting off of Effexor and I would guess that it would also work for Paxil, Lexapro and other SSRI's.

paxil has a liquid form. Titrate very slowly using the liquid and use prozac as suggested above.

I wish I'd done the prozac thing. Even going really slow on the liquid I got really screwed up by paxil withdrawal. I refused to go back on anything (partially due to my husband--big mistake) and ended up worse than I'd ever been, even before taking paxil.

I was on 2.0mg of paxil for two years until I found the liquid form to do the final titration. Based on how badly I got screwed up by the final withdrawals I wish I'd just stayed on the 2.0mg the rest of my life. It wasn't doing anything for me except keeping me from going through the withdrawal process.

In addition to the nausea/vomitting/dizziness etc, some people get bounce back depression/anxiety worse than they ever had before going on Paxil after they are finally off of it for a few days to a week.

I think it is wise you are switching on to something else. Prozac would be the best to go on and then go off.

There are no hospital programs, believe me I looked!! Most doctors refuse to believe that it is even a problem!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently got off effexor. The detox protocol that they have in Accupuncture helped a lot! I don't think i could have done it without those needles, they cleared my head and helped me get over the physical discomfort and panic. They are a lot cheaper than rehab. I strongly recommend it.
