Experiences w/ generic Adderall?

Posted by MissyMissy on April 23, 2002, at 23:36:27

My pharmacist filled my adderall script with "dextram salts" - said it's the new generic adderall. I haven't been able to find much info on it. It definitely has a different "aftertaste" to it. Any experiences with it or any reference reading suggestions??? Thanks

I think it was "retailed" at $130.00 for 90 tabs. I could check my insurance stubs, but there is a cost difference - Adderall brand was about $170.00 for 90 tabs.

Not sure if it's "doing the trick" yet. I started using the balance of the Adderall brand today until I find more info... I'm wondering if there would be a similar benefit to switch the brand and generic weekly or monthly, kindof like switching from Ritalin to Adderall to avoid tolerance, etc.

I can't even find a description of what "dextram salts" is!? I imagine it's the same 4 salt mix as Adderall? There must be some difference. I'll certainly post if I come across anything.

I'm on a generic adderall labeled as d-amphetamine combo
and manufactured by BARR. This is my first time on
a stimulant so I can't really compare. But I'll look
for my receipt for a price comparison.

It seems to be making me calmer and better able to
concentrate. But the past few nights I've been having
trouble sleeping because of restless legs. I've had
this problem before with Effexor and other AD's and
have never been able to figure out if they're related
and why. Any one else have this problem?

I'm currently on generic adderall 7.5mg bid,
EFfexor XR 150mg, and Ambien 20mg.

Thanks!

Generic Adderall= D-amphetamine Combo Barr Labs

Adderall is 1/4 Dextroamphetamine Saccharate;
1/4 Amphetamine Aspartate;
1/4 Dextroamphetamine Sulfate (Dexedrine);
1/4 Amphetamine sulfate (d,l racemic amphetamine= Benzedrine);

So a 20 mg pill has 5 mg each of these four different mixed salts of amphetamine.

30 of the generic "D-Amphetamine Combo" pills are $40 while 30 of Adderall (in any dose except XR) are $54.
(Source: Walgreens.com).

I don't know if it is bioequivalent to generic Adderall. Personally, I wouldn't take a chance until I saw some evidence that it is- generic products only have to be 80% as effective to be considered equivalent by the FDA. If you look at the charts of Ritalin versus its generic "methylphenidate" or "methylin", the generic & "methylin" peak faster and a bit higher but wears off a half an hour before Ritalin does. Since Ritalin only lasts about 3.5 hours a half an hour is pretty significant!

--Press Release about Generic Adderall------------

"Barr Receives Approval for Generic Adderall(R) Tablets
Company Will Launch First Generic Adderall Product"

POMONA, N.Y., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Barr Laboratories, Inc.
(NYSE: BRL) today announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food &
Drug Administration for Dextroamphetamine Saccharate, Amphetamine Aspartate,
Dextroamphetimine Sulfate, Amphetamine Sulfate Tablets, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and
30 mg. This mixed salts of a single-entity amphetamine product is an AB rated
generic equivalent of Shire Richwood Inc.'s Adderall(R) tablets. The Company
expects to be the first to market generic Adderall and plans to launch the
product immediately.
"The approval of generic Adderall is among the Company's most significant
generic product launches and is a result of our ability to accelerate the
development of barrier-to-entry products to ensure that we reach the
marketplace before competitors," said Bruce L. Downey, Barr's Chairman and
CEO.
Adderall is indicated as an integral part of a total treatment program

social) for a stabilizing effect in children with behavioral syndrome
characterized by the following group of developmentally inappropriate
symptoms: moderate to severe distractibility, short attention span,

Hi there,

I've been taking "real" Adderall for the past 5 months and for some reason this month my neuro didn't mark my scrip "brand name medically necessary" as he did in the prior month (he knew generic was available but preferred not to try it).

Anyway, I didn't notice until I filled my scrip and got the generic (Barr Labs) and was partly glad because my co-pay was $30 cheaper than normal, but thought it was going to be less efficacious. I took 20 mgs. this a.m. and 10 this afternoon and so far . . . nothing different to note. The pills are also blue and scored but more oval in shape. Who knows, hopefully it'll be just as effective. I know I responded better to real Klonopin v. the generic. I guess it all depends on the manufacturer. I think it's still expensive for being a generic. Adderall ain't cheap!

Hope that helps!

Katalina

The generic Adderall is not much less expensive yet, but now that the door is opened for a generic to be manufactured, more and more generic companies will jump on the band wagon to make it. It is at THAT time, when you will see prices fall dramatically due to competition (of which there is none, now).

Additionally, my experience is that it is a less effective pharmaceutical than the Brand med. Remember, generics are allowed a greater overall tolerance on both sides of the manufacturing specifications (weaker or stronger) when being manufactured and thus will vary more from lot to lot, even though pharmacists will try to convince you that generics are exacty the same as Brand Name.

Hi, new to these forums! Found this thread looking for info on Google. Was looking more info, but it looks like I may have more info than has been posted thus far, though I found the chemical explanation of the 4 salts helpful--no wonder the generic stuff tastes so sweet.

As background, I was diagnosed in 2002 by a licensed clinical psychologist at age 30, and have exhibited ADHD/ADD symptoms from early childhood without treatment or recognition, apart from my kindergarten teacher, who told my parents I was hyperactive and should take ritalin, to which my mother said no way. I have taken Paxil, generic ritalin,Celexa and Adderall XR for treatment of my symptoms of adult ADD (a combo of spaced-out and impulsive subtypes, no hyperactivity). Currently only taking generic adderall. SO that's my background.

I had taken Adderall XR 30mg per day for about 6 months until my insurance changed, and I just couldn't afford it anymore. Due to a county program, I can afford the generic non-extended release. These are the oval, bright blue scored pills described, which I take 2x a day at 30 mg. each dose. I have been following this regimen for a little over a month, and here are my observations of how this drug compares to the name-brand XR:
~ last about 3.5 to 4 hours. I take 2nd dose 3.5 hrs after first so I don't take a dip in the middle, which is exhausting.
~Less appetite depression for me
~If I don't eat regularly, I get depressed (emotionally), dizzy and confused (I'm borderline hypoglycemic), and all the positive drug benefits disappear, which didn't happen if I skipped a meal on XR.
~More frequent depression when I come off in the evening, although this is not always. Definitely is related to my blood-sugar. Once I eat, I usually perk up again.
~Works better (more quickly, noticeably) when I take before a meal, as opposed to with or after a meal.
~Less dry-mouth.
~More up and down feeling unless I time the second dose at just the right time, and there is definitely more variation in strength of effect/efficacy with other variables-food, timing, how much sleep I've gotten, type of foods eaten, water intake, etc.

Hope this helps. I feel it is acceptable as a substitute for XR, and if I could go back to XR, I'm really not sure if I would or not. I have lost less weight with this stuff, which is a good thing for me, but I have a concern about my increased occurence of depression, which negatively effects my job performance.
I think it may be because I really don't like my current job, but the emotional boost I get from the drug helps me just keep on track and DO the job instead getting distracted by how I feel about it. Anyone else with some experience with mood swings on the Adderall drugs? I'll post a new thread so this one doesn't get jacked--of course I'll have to remember to do it! OK, gotta go now. See ya.

generic adderall (IR) is labeled D-amphetamine combo
or D-amphetamine salt combo. generics work just as well, however the generics 5-7yrs ago would completely disolve when trying to shoot them. now the same generics chalk up and clog your cotton. Trying to shoot them is a waste of time. Best of swallowing or snorting. Generic ritalin made by Danburry are the best for IV. your brain recognizes methylphenadate the same way it reacts to cocaine. its a several hour coke high with a tapered ending and no crash. as far as klonopin 2mg... purpac and caraco are the most potent and can be taken sublingualy with a minty taste. Mylan are the weakest and are the hardest to dissolve orally. Teva is the middle of the road
