I am currently on 300 mg of Lamictal and my pdoc wants to take me up to 600mg...I thought that was a big jump and an awful high dose. What is the average dose?

Usual (manufacture-recommended dose) is 200 mg/day, although some people who have posted here benefit from less. Early tests indicated little improvement with doses over 200 mg., but the test groups are often too small to properly evaluate wide individual variations - or they use the statistics to chop them off as "anomalies"!.
I am just about to go up from 250 to 300, with continuing improvement as I have gone up from 100/mg day. My pdoc, who prescribes Lamictal extensively, says he has one patient on 600 mg/day, which works for that person, so it's unusual but not unprecented.
That IS a big jump, though, and sudden increases are said to increase the risk of rash even if you've been on it for a while. I would worry. My pdoc has been taking me up by 50 mg increments every 3-4 weeks.

I am also on 200 mg/day of Lamictal, which my pdoc told me is the average therapeutic dose for using Lamictal in BiPolar disorder. I think that if it's taken for seizures (because its labeled use is for seizures) it goes much higher.

> HundredhugsThe optimum dose is between 400-600 mg, at least according to my pdoc. 2 factors, tho: a) what illness are you taking it for, (bipolar, in my case )and b) it should be raised in 25 mg doses to pinpoint any unfavorable side effects.
Also, regarding the anti seizure quality is questionable, but late last year it became FDA approved for bipolar - the first drug since lithium!

I refused to take the 600 and agreed to take 450mg. I thought it was to big of a jump. This pdoc in an office where they cover for each other and she was covering for my regular pdoc. I don't see her often. She doesn't know my med history as well as my regular pdoc so I didn't appreciate her messing with my mood stabilizers but I am desperate. I am rapid cycling from h*** and racing hard and fast. My PRN's aren't doing the job anymore. I have some "stable " periods inbetween my cycles during the day and then start all over and it if very fatiguing!!
I have been on Lamictal for about 5 years so I guess they aren;t worried about the rash.
