DRY MOUTH CAUSED BY MEDICATION. . .

Posted by DiscoPuppy on June 28, 2002, at 17:26:07

psychostimulants, to be more specific. I have this HORRIBLE problem of dry DRY mouth on Adderall and don't know what to do about it. It's not only dry mouth but this icky, yukkie taste in it too. I drink at 128 ounces of water EVERY day, so it can't be a dehydration issue.

Chewing gum and sucking on some candy is not always practical or professional when I'm at work. Can you think of ANYTHING I can do to help this very annoying situation?

ALSO, as long as I'm on the subject, anyone know whether drinking that much water (128 ounces a day), can "flush" out my medication quicker, thus reducing its effectiveness?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I know chewing gum isn't very professional but gum works better than anything else for me. I keep it in my mouth but don't chew it after the initial flavour's gone - just tucked in the side of my mouth with an occasional chew now & then. Nobody ever notices & it works. The extra saliva produced will protect your teeth from decay too. Tooth decay caused by dry mouth from medications is a real concern for dentists.

128 ounces of water a day? That's 16 glasses! I'm not sure about it washing out your meds faster - that only works for water-soluble compounds, but you may find your electrolyte balance off from that much water.

Vitamin C will Make Adderall Go Away Faster... » DiscoPuppy

Dry mouth is the entire reason I quit Adderall. I didn't even finish the whole month's worth.

Vitamin C will acidify your system and that will make the ingredients of Adderall be excreted from your system faster.

Water alone will not do it - just make you urinate more and it won't relieve your dry mouth either.

Be careful with the Vit C, too much will give you diarrhea.

Try Biotene products. Toothpaste, mouthwash, gum.
They are made for us medicated, cotton mouthed, sweat machines.

A few things were useful to me when I was at a dose of TCA that caused that barely bearable (actually, it was so unbearable that I experimented with my dose to get it as low as possible and still be useful) cotton mouth.

Try: a clove in your mouth- just hold it there and take a chew now and then; eat lots of celery- freshens the mouth and is cooling; use a tongue scraper when you brush your teeth to clean off the built-up yuk on the back of your tongue- helps clear the taste as well as 'bad breath phobia'.

Good luck,
Cece

I have also found Biotene (brandname) toothpaste to be very helpful with the dry mouth problem....

This really is a ghastly problem--good luck!

Electrolyte Imbalance and Too Much Water » DiscoPuppy

In reply to What's an electrolyte imbalance? (nm) » IsoM, posted by DiscoPuppy on June 28, 2002, at 19:29:45

You get an imbalance of electrolytes when you drink more water than your body needs, causing different symptoms like dizziness, muscle weakness &/or twitching, fatigue, confusion. Your body will flush out electrolytes (important dissolved minerals in ionic form in your body fluids), the most important one being sodium, causing these symptoms. It's not so much the amount of water that causes the problem as the imbalance instead.

More info, but short & better explained than I would do, can be found here:

Please HELP! I've just started taking 30mg of ADDerall twice daily. Tonight, I can't catch a good breath. I'm okay, but I can't breathe well. Any suggestions. I'm drinking OJ as we speak.

Sorry if it's confusing, but there's a new board now for alternative treatments. Here's a link:

Anything acid will lower you absorption of adderall. Adderall might be causing some acid reflux...which for me makes me feel like I can't get a deep breath. You should talk with your dr.
Also drink lots of water, adderall is very drying and can make you feel like your throat won't open up. hope this helps
