Posted by EtktRide on February 3, 2004, at 16:45:12

Does anyone find therapy helpful in addition to meds for BP?? If so...what kind? I have been to like 5 therapists in the past year and none seem to be able to help and I do not someone to sit and listen to me babble on about my life with no suggestions as to how to improve.

Hi:
I have same/similar question regarding 'Psycho-therapy.' Unfortunately, I too never able to find the right match while I found the RIGHT pdoc. who was able to find the RIGHT med. combo. for my often, difficult dx., Bp II with rapid cycler.
In my personal experience along with the reading the others', there is NO good point to get/seek therapy if there is NO desire to change things any of therapists suggested. The most important thing is whether you REALLY want to change the life you have. In my case, TIME is ONLY answer that in turn enables me to change/improve the life I once cherished. Because, I just sufferred from the thought of having Bp was enough, ... not able to focus other things.
However, I believe that there is a good way to improve one's life by getting a good/right therapist, ... Just I couldn't meet/find a therpist with whom I wanted to talk and confer any of my problems.
H.G.

I definitely think that therapy is important. I know that I picked up a lot of negative thinking processes from living with a life long depression. Mood disorders can cause us to miss out on a lot of important developmental experiences. You should probably interview a few therapists before deciding on one, and never feel pressure to use a particular therapist just because you went to a trial session. Also, you might want to use a psychologist or a social worker for therapy and just see your psychiatrist for meds. If you want a lot of feedback definitely look into cognitive behavioral therapy.

Good luck!

This is actually a very intersting question about the value of therapy. The answer, which may surprise most is that therapy can be even more effective than medication for curing depression. Case in point: A little over a year ago there was an article in Scientific American that discussed this very thing. They set up a study where they took a significant group of people who where suffering from mild to moderate depression and to one set, just serzone was prescribed(I think it was serzone) and to the other set, they just used CBT. Before the study was begun, both groups underwent PET(proton emmision tomography) Scans of their brains. This was repeated each week for 3 months. AT the end of the three months the physiological changes to the brain(from baseline) of just those that believed their conditions had improved were identical...thats right folks...identical. It is for this reason that the highest response rate for treatment is ALWAYS a combination of medication with therapy. This study was actually repeated(for obvious reasons) at Mass General and the results were nearly identical. So for those inclined....

I'd like to redirect follow-ups regarding therapy to Psycho-Babble Psychology. Here's a link:
