Buspar +/- augmentation meds for SP

Posted by Rocket Jackson on May 14, 2003, at 2:25:34

Just curious if any SP sufferers have had any luck with Buspar, either alone or with augmentation. I'm aware of Buspar's "slower," non-benzo properties and its indication for GAD, but I'm wondering if it might at least help to decrease some of the day to day anticipatory anxiety some of us feel. As a med student on my Psychiatry rotation, I was told on a few occasions by professors that Buspar basically equates to water, so I'm not quite sure what to think about this med. Any ideas?

And what about side effects? I would think that as a serotonin agonist that one might expect some sexual dysfunction or weight gain, but neither seem to be reported much.

And finally, does Buspar really have a "feel" to it? Or is it more of a subtle, calming effect?

Thanks for any info on this!

Rocket

I think it is basically "water" for a lot of the off-label stuff that the sales reps have pushed it for in the past. Taken by itself it doesn't appear to do much for SP, panic, or depression.

I tried it back in the '80's with lithium when it first came out. It definitely has an "effect" you can feel rather quickly after you take it. The thing I noticed was this cool tingling that would rise up along my spine all the way to my neck. Since I was trying it as a switch from a benzo for panic symptoms it didn't work well and got ditched. In the last few years I've tried it again with various combos and found it only to be helpful at low doses with low doses of an SSRI or other serotonergic med. Sfx-wise I notice dizziness, a "suffocating" feeling when it peaks, and if I take too high a dose-dysphoria/hostility. It *does* work quite well for anticipatory anxiety, however. I do remember after stopping it noticing a marked increase in obssessive/worry. It's a worry-wart drug.

I've tried Buspar by itself and with other meds. I never noticed it having any appreciable effect on my sp. No major side effects, at least.
