MAOI experiences

Posted by mmcasey on April 6, 2003, at 13:44:22

Hi... I'm just wondering what experiences people have had with MAOIs? How hard is it to deal with the dietary restrictions, and what other side effects have people had? I probably should try an MAOI because I've tried paxil, celexa, effexor, and wellbutrin, and it seems like it's time for a new category, and I don't want to try TCAs because of sweating. Thanks.

I too went through numerous SSRIs with limited relief, and they kept pooping out on me. For years i resisted my pdoc's advice to try an MAOI because i was afraid of the diet. I have to recommend that you give the MAOI a try, because it has knocked out my depression like nothing else, and the diet is not nearly as restrictive as you might think. Check the newer links and dont rely on the old lists that the docs seem to hand out. As for side effects, it seems that what you hear most about is trouble sleeping (Parnate) and weight gain (Nardil). There is a wonderful group on Yahoo of people who take MAOIs and i am sorry i dont have the computer savvy to link you, but im sure someone here can. The group is an amazing source of info and experiences on MAOIs.

I have just started Marsilid MAOI 4 days ago , I am currently at 50mg/day (max is 150mg/day) . Marsilid has been discontinued in USA but I heard that Marplan has replaced Marsilid. Since the beginning , I have absolutely no side effects . I have also been on various SSRIs and TCA too before starting this MAOI , I now really hope that Marsilid will be the right drug for me.

i took parnate and the dietary restrictions did not bother me at all ..... i mean
1) they are not that bad, i still ate pizza and basically everything except for 4 ingredients
2) when you are happy nothing seems to bother you

parnate had the following side effects:

-only need 6 or 7 hours sleep versus 9 - 14 beforehand
-definately increased libido
-definately increased energy
-definate weight loss
-felt great

my pdoc really loves parnate... he uses it right away ... and most studies would support him.... i think if you've failed 2 SSRIs (i.e. non responsive, or only somewhat responsive) you should definately try a TCA (for melancholic) or an MAOI (for vegetative/atypical)
... if you're getting at least a partial response from an SSRI, perhaps increasing the dose or augmenting would be a good idea

Thanks to everyone who replied. That's good to hear about
MAOIs especially with treatment-resistant depression...
I have gotten NO RESPONSE from anything that I've tried so far.
I don't know if I am atypical or melancholic or neither.
I don't need more sleep than ever before, but I have always had
trouble sleeping and I have taken trazodone for almost two
years to help me sleep. I have not gained or lost weight due
to my depression. I feel like I might have melancholic features
because of anhedonia (I don't enjoy much of anything). I have
always been "functional", but I am generally speaking a very
determined person and and I have a very strong
sense of responsiblity, so that has definitely affected my
functional-ness. Any comments?
