Hello ,
I am about to start MAOI Marsilid tomorrow . I don’t know that much about Marsilid except that it belongs to same MAOI class as Nardil and Parnate (both non-selective and irreversible).
My pdoc has already informed me about the strict diet I need to follow in order to avoid problems.I have browsed many forums regarding MAOI treatment and found that some people had emergency pills with them while being on MAOI treatment . I know that its main action is to lower blood pressure in case of hypertensive crisis and I am seeking further information about it ,therefore I would be pleased if you could answer the following questions :
- Is it possible to "bear" such hypertensive crisis just by letting it disappear with time ?
- According to you ,What is the best emergency pill available ?
Thanks in advance
Frog

I suppose it is possible to bear a crisis although it's not a good idea... even if taking a pill I would go to the emergency room...
I know there are a few pills you can take to decrease your blood pressure... might want to do a search online

With an emergency pill there is really no need to go the emergency room unless it doesn't seem to work for some reason. Usually the pill will do it's job and you can avoid the emergency room completely.-Jessica

First of all, "bearing it" means risking the potential for death, as hypertensive crises are potentially fatal.
People don't go to the E-R over them because they're annoyed by the way their beating heart sounds while they're trying to listen to Billy Joel, they do it so they won't die. Why would you ever risk your life over something when you can take a pill that could save it?
There's special emergency intervention pills available. Don't confuse these with beta blockers, which take 40 minutes to 1 hr. to kick in. I'm sure they kick in much faster than that, since they're intended for emergencies.

>Well said. I mentioned this to Frog on another forum, but for the sake of others that may be reading I'll repeat. I take Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) for emergencies. It is a safe one in that you can take it even if your blood pressure isn't elevated - so you don't have to take your blood pressure in the middle of a crisis. It's perfectly safe. It also begins acting fairly quickly.

Ok , thanks very much for the information utopizen
I didn't think those crises could have a fatal issue and for sure I find better to have an emergency pill me than going to ER.Best regards,

I skipped the thread, forgive any redundencys This is what I did- Nifedipine is the standard from what I've heard. It helped a little. My doc sent me out for a blood pressure monitor so I could keep an eye on things. Sometimes you feel funny, but it's easier to check it at home. If you're normal or high normal, don't sweat it. If the numbers are roaring up, you know to go to the ER.
I never had a hypertension problem, but you can get this nasty sick feeling from low levels of tyramine (I would get all drooly) and all you can do is let it clear your system. Over the long term I got more tyramine tolerant to stuff like M&Ms and minor stuff.
Anyway, the diet sounds scary but you'll adjust. Just tell people you have food allergies if you eat out and have to ask a lot of questions. I thought no pizza was a cheap price for feeling decent. Just get chinese instead.missliz
This is the end of the thread.
