I am not psychotic, but my shrink wants me to consider a very low dose of Risperdal for this disjointed feeling I often get. (It's as if parts of me are outside of me. He says he's had patients shake this feeling for the first time in their lives after trying this drug at a low dose.)
For one thing, I dont know if I want to add ONE MORE DAMN DRUG to the diet.
And for another, I'm kinda curious about side effects. One is tardive dyskenisia, which sounds scary. Is this effect permanent?
Another, less serious but enough to bum me out just the same, is weight gain.I would appreciate hearing from anybody who has had experience with this drug. Thanks!

hi im currently taken a low dosage of risperdal among the other three psychiatric medications in my diet so I really know where you are coming from, I can tell you that I too am concerned about that one side effect as well I have researched the common side effects which are low in percentages if you have any questions specifically I can look for them. Maybe this is of help "one mg resperidone is equipotent to 100mg chlorpromazine, 100mg thioridazine, or 2mg haloperidol. Id say personally if you can live with out taking it then dont but if the feeling you speak of occurs regurally to the point that your daily living is affected it might be worth a try.

You're feeling depersonalization- and no AP I ever heard of works for that. Having said that, I don't believe in taking APs for non-psychotic conditions ( and yes I've gotten TD from atypicals). Risperdal is one of the most energizing of the atypicals and often has akathisia as a side-effect. therapy is the route for your condition, assuming it's not a side-effect of a med you're taking? - judy

I was taking Resperdal, and I'm not psychotic either. I take Seroquel for sleep-100mg, another med that may cause tardive dyskenisia which may not happen until down the road or if at all. That worries me a little. I guess we're all different. It also made me bloated, and gain about 15 Lbs. I wish you the best of luck-I wish I could have had more positive for ya-just my experience,
Kristen

Sounds like depersonalization. My girlfriend actually experienced a worsening of depersonalization after being put on low-dose Risperdal. That is of course, just a single experience - and it may or may not have even been caused by the Risperdal.
From the information I've gathered, benzodiazepines are usually the most effective drugs in treating depersonalization/derealization symptoms. Which is not suprising, considering DP is generally the result of excessive anxiety.
But, who knows, if your doc says it helps some of his patients, then maybe it will help you too. As far as TD goes, at the lowest doses, it's an extremely unlikely side effect. Not saying you shouldn't be concerned about the possibility, but there isn't a need for overconcern either - talk it over with your doc.

Hi, I felt "weird" and depressed even after being put on low-dose Risperdal. But I only took it 2x-had to stop it.
I hope you talk to your doc:-)
