Best second drug with an MAOI?

Posted by Bobbiedobbs on November 14, 2002, at 14:31:55

My new doctor is casting about for a good "second" drug to take with an existing MAOI. The idea is to try something to supplement the MAOI before getting off of it entirely and going through a wash-out period and trying a whole different type of drug. We are starting with Klonopin. Other possibility is Neuronton. I have had bad experience with Haldol and Risperdal. Any experience of a second med in connection with MAO and what where the results for social anxiety, OCD and in general? Thanks., PHil

The most common seems to be Lithium. You don't need as high a dose as if you were taking it alone. I took it at a lower dose and didn't need to get the usual blood tests. I stopped because I was worried about acne and was already having a severe acne reaction from something else I was taking.

Lamictal is another common augmentor. I am currently taking it. I just started though so I don't have anything to report.

Others are the anti-psychotics, like Risperdahl and Zyprexa, which you've tried. I also have terrible reactions to them. Yuk!

I've also heard of people using Pindolol but I don't know much about it.

Neuronton has had positive effects for some people and helped with insomnia.

And finally, good reports from people using a stimulant, T3. But since this isn't recommended by the pharaceutical company you need to be closely monitored by your doctor if you go this route.

Well - that's what I've discovered from my research. I wish you well.

I guess the plan is:

MAOI -> MAOI + X -> X -> X + Y (-> Y)

Klonopin seems like a reasonable choice for X because of it's powerful anxiolytic effects. (What is the plan for Y?) I've found that a combination of Klonopin (as background medication) and Xanax as the main benzo to be very effective because to a small extent Xanax is antidepressive, whereas Klonopin can be slightly depressogenic.

Also remember that if you monitor things very carefully you can start on Y without a complete washout of MAOI. You psychiatrist may feel differently but plenty of people take MAOIs in combination with TCAs or SSRI as steady state medication. Obviously they have to be constantly monitoring their B.P. and on the guard for emerging toxic effects.

Good luck,

Britt
