antidepressant as anti-psychotic?

Posted by Kari on May 18, 2002, at 13:28:32

Hi,

Can an AD such as celexa have an anti-psychotic effect? I suffer from depression and schizotypal personality disorder and become paranoid and delusional under severe stress. I found that celexa brings me back to reality and prevents additional relapses. This is the only drug I take- can this be possible?

Thanks,
Kari.

Hi Kari,
Dont know that much about it with your diagnosis as I am bipolar and I just started taking Celexa with Risperdal. The pdoc said that Risperdal (Ris) is an antipsychotic that is used now in a smaller dose than was first used. I have never taken one before now and so far so good. My post right before yours is asking more or less the same questions. Just trying to find out if there are any side effects. I kinda dont want to know ahead of time as when I do know what the side effects are then I usually get them. If it said that 1 in 1,000,000 will die from taking a small dose then I will feel as if I am that one in a million. Tonight, I have a dry (hacking) cough that started with a sore throat. I called the pharmacist to see if that was anything I should be concerned about but he was not helpful. Said to call my doc on Monday if still sick. Probably just a cold but??? on the literature with the Celexa it said to beware of sore throat with fever, or was that with the Ris??? not sure soooo. hopefully I am just sick... Will let everyone know, I am sure that all are worried about me... Anyway back to the mood stabilizer, Ris, aka anti-psychotic, hopefully this will be the ONE that works (at least for awhile.

sorry about all the ramblin...

Hi, Kari.

I don't think Celexa can act as an antipsychotic per se, but people often find that when they take SSRIs they're better able to cope with stress. People who have extreme reactions to stress are often helped by SSRIs. A lot of people become easily angered or startled under stress; maybe your quasi-psychotic reactions are just a different manifestation of the same kind of thing. If so, it would make sense for the Celexa to help.

Thanks for your reply, as it turns out all of the symptoms I was experiencing was because I have bronchitis that seems to be on the way to pneumonia and it was not the celexa or the risperdol.

In a way I was glad that I was really sick and was not obsessing for nothing. ha ha!

I read with great interest your above conversation. I have had much experience with a lot of this crap (20 years bulimic and depressed, 15 years working with handicapped people and now of all things NERVE DAMAGE). You won't find too many doctors who will agree with you. 98% will say this bitch is really nuts--she thinks that an antidepressant is helping with her delusions. 1. We know she's nuts because she walked through the door and told us. 2. We know that she is delusional because she walked through the door and told us. This must be just another one of her delusions. You would not believe what doctors say about you behind your back. I say if it is helping you, then it is helping you. Why question it? No one can see inside of your brain and no one but you knows how you feel. Your answer is really written in your question. You say that your psychotic symptoms are triggered by stress, therefore by eliminating the stress you may prevent psychotic episodes. If you get the manufacturer's inserts for all of the psych drugs that you are or have been on, you will see that they all say that the exact action in that brain is unknown, and that it is "believed to work in such and such a manner". Most doctors can't stand a patient who knows more than they do. "I spent 10 years of my life in college; I'm $300,000 in debt, you took two pills and are going to tell me that you know more than me?" Just tell your doctor that you are doing much better and wait a few months before going into great detail so that he/she can see for him/herself that you are doing better. The newest trend in drug therapy seems to be finding new uses for old drugs instead of inventing new ones. I would probably go with the antidepressant if it works because the side effects of neuroleptics can be atrocious.

You had asked side effects from anti psychotics-I doubt that you psychosomatically come up with these. First off are the bizarre muscle contractures. They can come anywhere in the body. They can cause you to walk abnormally or talk abnormally. A drug called Cogentin is usually given to undo this condition but it doesn't always work completely. Another problem is blurred vision, but not for everything, sometimes just for reading.

Thanks for your response. You're right about ADs being safer than APs. And it IS stress which triggers the delusions.
Sorry you have to deal with so much. Was the nerve damage drug-induced?

Take care.
