Does anyone know whether the original Eli Lilly Prozac is available in the UK? I reacted quite well once on this med whilst living overseas, but was prescribed an equivalent 'fluoxetine' in the UK. The effects couldnt have been more different.Prozac actually made me whistle(?!),whereas our UK equivalent had me pacing back and forth in anger and rage.Three weeks later I was in a suicidal major depression.
I'm thinking of trying a low dose of the original version again, but I'll most prob have to buy it online....

I don't know if the original is available in the UK but I am really surprised to hear that you reacted differently to the generic. In the US, the FDA is supposed to make sure that the generic drugs are good in quality.
If I were you, I would ask your pharmacist if there is more than one company making the generic form. If there is, find out which one you have and request a different manufacturer's fluoxetine.
When you took Prozac, was it the same dose as your current fluoxetine?

Hello,
I guess the info on generic versus original is very controversial. I have read posts of people responding differently when switching to generic (one reason I still take the original, the other reason is I got it for free, lucky me...), but hten, that could be coincidence, and if it was really a widespread problem, there would probably be more posts about that... I guess a lot of people are switching to generic? And most of them just do fine?
The other thing is, I have heard from people taking prozac, or any AD, for the second time, and it had different effects / side effects, just because it was the second time they took it and their body / chemical makeup had somehow changed.Kat26

Yup, the dosages were exactly the same (20mg).I thought at first that perhaps I had reacted so differently because I had tried them at different stages of my illness. In other words, perhaps I responded far better to prozac recently than when I had when I tried the generic over a year ago, when I was severely ill.I'd not reacted well to ssri's as a rule.To my surprise though, it (prozac) worked quite well and was actually fairly pleasant to take with Sam-e.I only tried it for a short while as I bought it whilst on holiday. Then I returned to the UK and found an old strip of the generic, and gave one a try, expecting the same response.
As I said, it was quite differnet.I'm not suggesting at all that the quality/purity was poor, as my doc has had many patients respond very well to it.But there's no doubt that they achieved very different responses in me personally-I couldn't hazard a guess as to why.I'll definitely look in to the possibility of trying another manufacturer though.
This is the end of the thread.
