Cyclic worries - any help out there?

Posted by TenelKa on February 10, 2002, at 11:20:39

I have GAD, and I've been focusing on one thing for worries/anxiety for a long time now - and the thing is, I don't know why. Irrational, stupid stuff. But I can't break the thought cycle - I'm on BuSpar, been on it for a month now, but I don't know how much that's helping. It's scaring the hell out of me and I keep having panic attacks, and I don't know what to do. Any advice?

Are the thought cycles like OCD?

Hi,

You may need to add a low-dose of an SSRI (Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, etc.) to help breakup the obsessing and ruminating. Also a benzodiazepine like Klonopin or Xanax or Ativan added should stop your panic attacks. Also, cognitive-behavioral therapy could help you stop the irrational thoughts, too.

I'm not sure, you'd have to be more descriptive

I just asked because I have OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) (under control now with medication). OCD also makes you worry about irrational things... that is the obsession part. The compulsion part is what you do to get relief from the scary thoughts. You have probably heard about the most common compulsions like continuous handwashing (because of irrational thoughts about contamination and germs), or continuous checking (because of irrational thoughts of danger, or having forgotten somehting, or being responsible for something). In other instances the compulsions are less obvious. Some people get obsessions (irrational scary thoughts that you want to get rid of, but the harder you try, the more persistent they become), and deal with them with less obvious compulsions like mental undoing, excessive praying, excessive asking for reassurance, etc.

Hmm, the excessive asking for reassurance thing seems like me...
