PAXIL experiences for social phobia depression??

Posted by 3 Beer Effect on January 28, 2002, at 2:39:11

I was wondering if anyone had any stories about their experiences with Paxil (paroxetine)? (I am trying to decide whether I should bother trying Paxil or just ask for the MAOI Nardil when I go see my new psychiatrist shortly). I have major depression w/ social phobia.

I noticed the prescribing info says the dosage for social phobia is 20 mg while the dosage for panic disorder is 40 mg/day. I read in some psychiatry textbook that the dosages of most medicines for panic disorder & social phobia are usually the same. Is 20 mg or 40 mg the best for social phobia?

Does Paxil cause insomnia? I have been on other SSRIs such as Zoloft 100 mg & Celexa 40 mg both of which gave me horrible insomnia.

Sorry, 3 Beer Effect, but I can't give much help. I found Paxil very effective for my depression & while I don't have social phobia, when I'm depressed, I'm definitely anti-social. Both Paxil & Celexa makes me more sociable.

I take Celexa now (along with adrafinil) & prefer it. Neither Celexa or Paxil had any different effects on my strange sleep patterns one way or the other. I've had those sleep patterns years before I ever started using any meds.

The reason I wanted to quit Paxil is it's very short half-life. Noramlly, I take my meds in the morning & if I ever forgot Paxil, I'd soon realise it as the day wore on by the discontinuation/withdrawal symptoms beginning. That doesn't happen with Celexa.

3 Beer Effect, could I ask you about how the adrafinil helps you sleep pattern? I have always had a strange sleep pattern where I'll have trouble falling asleep (too much stuff racing around in my head) and then in the morning I find it extremely difficult to get up and get moving. It's particularly hard for me because I really need to exercise regularly for my mental and physical health and morning is about the only time I can consistently work out. My sleep pattern makes this almost impossible, though. Do you think the adrafinil would help with that type of thing?

Info On Adrafinil, not modafinil (Provigil) » BLPBart

Well this "guy" will do her best to answer. :)
I'm on adrafinil (Olmifon™), not modafinil (Provigil™) but the effects are supposed to be very similar, if not the same.

I was on adrafinil for a little over a month & that's what convinced me it was so great for me, at least. Then I ran out & due to an ordering mix-up (& X-mas mail rush) didn't get my adrafinil till last week. I've again been on it for 10 days & am just starting to notice myself a little less sleepy.

My sleep patterns have always been, even as a small kid, screwy. Couldn't sleep when I went to bed - that's when I remembered everything that I couldn't in the day-time, mind going a mile-a-minute, toes tapping & wiggling in bed, took forever to fall asleep. But come morning, I had to be pried out of bed with a crowbar. I couldn't even open my eyes more than a squint & couldn't focus or do much for the first hour. I never knew before but it can be part of the typical ADHD pattern.

Shortly before I ran out of the adrafinil first time, I started sleeping better. I actually slept one night right through - I don't EVER remember doing that in my life. I woke at 8 having to pee real bad! I started sleeping more soundly too, not so light & fitful. And by the end of the first package, when I woke & got up, I'd only stumble about for 10-15 minutes - a miracle, as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping the previous results will return after I've been on adrafinil longer again & I don't see why not.

IsoM, thanks for the information. The reason why I'm asking these questions is that I've been on ADs for depression for a while now but am having a lot of trouble with fatigue and non-motivation. I started looking into the various stims mentioned on this board and one, I think adderall, led me to a web site on Adult ADD and I just about fell over when I read it. It sounded very much like me, particularly those sleep problems, also things like having trouble focusing on reading (I can read the same paragraph about 14 times when I rad and still not comprehend anything). Anyway, I'm going to my pdoc on Feb. 11 and I'm going to talk to him about me maybe having ADD and trying some type of stimulant and see what happens.
