Hi!
Just had to talk to my pdoc, as I developed cold sores in my mouth and nose. This is very common right before I come down with a cold, but I'm at 200mg of Lamictal, and my husband freaked-reminding me that SJS is a fatal rash. I reminded him that for someone who is already suicidal, that that is not necessarily a bad thing--removes all the guilt from taking my own life, however, he did NOT appreciate my sense of humor.Anyway, the point of my story is when I called my pdoc, he did think I was coming down with a cold, as SJS is usually external (kind of like impetigo), but he also mentioned that the 200mg I was on a *fairly low dose*. So just a follow up to our earlier conversation. I've read your other threads and am glad to see that your se reduced at 75 mg! :)
Warmly, Crinn

> Warmly, CrinnHi - This is my first post, although I've been following the Lamictal posts with interest, since I started on it in October for BPII. When I went up to 150mg. my mood improved dramatically; I can't even remember when I've felt that good for that long (1 month). After I went up to 200mg. I got a sore on the tip of my tongue. Although I've never had a canker sore or cold sore of any kind, I attributed it to something I ate. It persisted for about 3 weeks, during which time I felt like I had the flu every day (weak, achy, etc.). Since it is the flu season, my pdoc and I attributed it to that, and I went up to 250mg. The next day, the inside of my mouth (especially the entire surface or my tongue and the roof of my mouth) was extremely painful. It felt like I had burned my mouth by eating something way too hot. It continued to be so painful that I couldn't eat. When I refilled my RX, the instructions from the pharmacy said to contact the dr. asap if "painful sores in the mouth" appeared. Since I was on vacation, I just stopped taking the Lamictal for several days, and the soreness in my mouth went away. I tried to go back on it and again, my tongue was so painful I couldn't stand it. I just went off again, and my mouth was fine. When I got home I called my pdoc, and she agreed that it was a good idea to stop, although she was not familiar with this side-effect. The Lamictal was so great for my mood that I have started back on it. I'm going to try to see if my mood will be good on a lesser dose, as has been the experience of others here. I'm really curious to know if anyone else has experienced the extremely painful sores in the mouth from Lamictal.

Hi Crinn,
I was having trouble posting for about a week there, so I couldn't thank you for thinking of me! Unfortunately, I've been having no end of trouble lately. Very tired, spacey, foggy-headed ... I'm not sure what it is.This seems to happen quite often after I've been on a med for awhile -- the med kind of "poops out" on me, leaving me worse off than before. I am so med sensitive that I usually react to about 1/4 of the usual dose.
I decreased the lamictal to 50 mg last night. I'm not sure if it will help going off of it or not, but I guess I won't know until I try.
Thanks again for thinking of me -- sorry for the depressing post!

Hey Cindy--
More out of distractedness than anything I have dropped my Lamictal back down to 25-50 mg, and am feeling cheerful again the last few days. Go figure.

Hi Hattree --
I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better! Sometimes it seems that it happens like that, kind of like a happy accident.I've been all over the map this past week.
After I cut down to 50 mg Lamcital, I started feeling incredibly sick -- but I don't think it's because of decreasing the Lamictal. It was most likely because I was incredibly stupid and tried doing about 4 things all at the same time -- sometimes I get so desparate I just don't have the patience to try one change at a time, but then I get myself into trouble.
First, I tried adding a small dose of Prozac at the same time that I reduced the Lamictal. After 2 days on the Prozac, I felt so exhausted that I tried Wellbutrin to give me some energy -- but that only made me feel worse -- exhausted, dizzy, nauseated, etc. I have noticed that I cannot augment with the Lamictal like I could with SSRIs.
On top of all that, at the same time I decreased the Lamictal and added the Prozac, I decreased the Serzone I was taking from 50 mg to 25 mg (I know -- a VERY LOW DOSE! I just wanted to get off of it for good in case that was causing my fatigue/foggy-head. I didn't think cutting back 25 mg would be a big deal.)
I went back up to 75 mg Lamictal immediately, but for about 5 days it was all I could do to keep myself from passing out.
After those 5 days, I finally started feeling better. I'm now on 75 mg Lamictal and 25 mg Serzone. I feel better than before -- not as clouded in my head. I think perhaps the Serzone was the culprit! And my guess is that the Prozac and Wellbutrin don't mix well with Lamictal! (at least not for me).
So that's where I'm at for now! We'll see what happens next week.
Most of all, I am glad that you are doing better. Keep me posted!

Hi fellow Lamictal users!
Sorry to hear you are not doing so well Cindy...it sure is a struggle isn't it? I will be hoping you start to feel better soon. Glad to hear you are doing better Hattree....
I just saw my Physdoc today...I had decreased Lamictal to 50 mg due to bad flu like symptoms. I am still feeling very depressed but the flulike symptoms went away. My doc thinks if I try to titrate REALLY slowly we may avoid those S/E's....so he has left me at 50 MG of Lamictal for a month but wants to get me to 200mg...he stills believes that is best for most, if I can ever get there! I may be older and greyer by then ;o)...but he also added Wellbutrin today....so we will see...I am hoping for the best..just like both of you...however, last time I tried Wellbutrin it made me sleepy!!....I am just like you Cindy with weird reactions to meds...I will let you know how goes it...
take care
Mags

Hi fellow Lamictalians -
Well, I made it to 125mg, and then I got a flu I couldn't shake. I thought I was over it, then I got this strep-throat like inflammation, and my lymph glands became very swollen. The gp said it wasn't lamictal related, but I dropped down to 50 mg anyway, just in case. So now I'm back up to 75. As usual, felt better for a couple of days after the increase, then nothing. It's such a long road getting up to a therapeutic dose.
Hope you're all doing well -

Hi Mags -I posted this two days ago, but for some reason it didn't show up. Essentially I waited until my sore throat was gone and my lymph glands were no longer inflamed. I'm titrating up now at 25 mg a week, instead of 12.5, because I'm getting so impatient.
Take care - Jane

Hi Lamictalites!
I am new to this thread...hope all of you with the flu symptoms and mouth sores are doing better. Ugh--that's no fun.
I had a question about another possible side effect of Lamictal. I have been itching all over, but no sign of any rash or anything. Just mild itching, but it is still annoying. Has this happened to anyone else?
I'm at 150mg (taking it for bipolar)& going up to 200mg tomorrow. I have been titrating up by 50mg a week, which seems kind of fast from all I've read on the bd. I'm hoping this isn't a sign the rash is coming as I think at 150mg the Lamictal is finally helping on the depression. But I'm waiting to call my pdoc to ask about it, as I have been calling him all the time it seems about other issues. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks in advance for your help!
Allison
P.S. Lamictal is the only pdrug I'm taking right now.

Itching isn't uncommon with Lamictal. Aveeno (colloidal oatmeal) baths have been the most effective at relieving the itching and skin problems for me. It can be found in drug stores and a lot of grocery stores. Lamictal has proved to be the most effective med for me, so I'm highly motivated to wait out and do what I have to do to put up with side effects. Actually the side effects have been less problematic with Lamictal than with any other mood stabilizer/anticonvulsant.Blessings,
Chris A.
P.S. I also did some "careful watching" during some minor rashes, but have been able to continue with the med.

It definitely could be the Lamictal, and do call your pdoc on this one. He may tell you to drop back until the itch passes and titrate more slowly, or at least stay where you are for now. But given the (remote) possibility of a dangerous rash, I'm sure the doc won't think badly of you for calling.
BTW, I had an intense itch on my belly with no visible marks for several months on Lamictal before it went away. The stuff works, though. Good luck wiht it.

Hi Chris and Hattree,
Thanks so much for your replies. I feel much better knowing that it probably is a side effect of the Lamictal, but that doesn't necessarily mean I will get the rash. I've come to really like Lamictal (I think it is effective (for now anyway!) and not too many other side effects) and I would hate to have to change meds again. But that is a good idea, that maybe I should just titrate up more slowly until the itching passes. I stayed at 150 today and will call my pdoc before going to 200mgs.
Thanks again for your help!

Hi Alison -
I have very sensitive skin, so I always have an all-over mild itching reaction for the first few days after I titrate up - especially in bed, at night. I sometimes take a benedryl, and it helps. Lamictal seems to sensitize skin to any irritation - I suspect the itching has something to do with winter dryness. I also get a flushing reaction the first day I titrate - again, benedryl helps, so it must be an enhanced histamine response. If I were you, I'd cut back to 25 mg titrations. The serious rash - the one that could be fatal - is extremely rare with low titrations, in adults who are not taking other anti-epileptics.
Also, a backscratcher is a good investment.

Hi Allison,
I echo everything our other "Lamictalites" have said here ...I also had trouble with itching while I was titrating up on the Lamictal ... it would go away, and then return for a couple of days after I would increase the dose. But I have no problem whatsoever now, and have been at 75 mg. for a couple of months (I am very med-sensitive, and react to much smaller doses than normal. Also, I titrated up very slowly -- about 12.5 mg a week --and still had the itching. Even developed a small rash on my wrist at about 50 mg., which I had checked out by a dermatologist who said it was nothing to worry about. It went away in about a week.)
Best of luck to you! Glad to hear the Lamictal is helping you!

just thought I'd let you know that I got very tired on Wellbutrin and that's the complete opposite to 95% of Wellbutrin-related posts I've seen. I was falling asleep at 9p.m. and having to wear shades to watch telly my eyes were so light-sensitive.
The good news is that after 3 weeks or so on WB the tiredness has gone. I don't know how long you tried it before so this may not be relevant.
Anyway, best wishes for your Lamictal journey, pete

i just started lamictal for depression. i've been itching and have a slight rash on my chest and neck. i was worried so i called my friend, a nurse, to look at me. she said rashes on the chest could be psychosomatic, as i know i have to look out for a rash. the itching could be too. it doesn't feel like an allergic reaction (i had one to morphine and i.v. benadryl didn't even touch it) but it is annoying. and my skin is red. is that a rash?

Yes, I think what you are displaying should be considered to be a rash.
Any type of rash that appears when starting Lamictal must be viewed as a possibly serious reaction to the drug. Certain rashes produced by Lamictal are potentially fatal. This includes a condition known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. The prudent thing to do at this point is to speak to your doctor immediately. If you cannot contact a physician who is trained to administer Lamictal, I think you should discontinue it immediately.
What dosage of Lamictal did you start at? Did you use the special starter pack provided by the drug company? It is crucial to start Lamictal at a low dosage and increase it gradually in order to prevent a rash from occurring.
If you began taking Lamictal at too high a dosage, you can stop it now and restart it later once the rash disappears.
Lamictal can produce rashes that are not fatal. However, it is difficult to know in advance what type of rash will develop. It is better to be safe and treat it as being potentially serious.
It is not psychosomatic.

I'm on Lamictal. My Dr. told me that if I developed a rash, just as you described yours, that I should stop the med immediately and go to the ER room. I'd AT LEAST call my Dr. right away.

I haven't been on any of the stuff mentioned, but when I got off of Effexor, I itched everywhere, but I didn't have a rash. It kind of reminded me of how heroin addicts scratch themselves when they need a fix! (I only know about this from watching 'Ray')
