Could synthroid cause appetite increase??

Posted by lissy on January 13, 2002, at 14:20:33

I have been on Synthroid for about 3 years and since my last
recent increase in dosage which was about 2 months ago,
my appetite started getting huge about a couple weeks after
starting the increase I was wondering if it could be the Synthroid
or if me starting to take One-a-day maximum multivitamins
could cause it. I know it sounds crazy, since synthroid
isn't suppose to increase appetite or weight, but neither
were paxil or effexor and I had gained weight a few years
ago on both of those.

Could you be on a high enough dose to make you a little hyperthyroid? That might cause you to eat more.

I guess, theoretically, if it has the effect of increasing metabolic function, it is possible, but I don't really know.

I think getting your numbers checked would be a good idea, in case the increase pushed you into hyper, like BLPBart mentioned.

I have hypothyroidism & it's treated by Synthroid too. When it was initially treated, I never realised how much my appetite had gone down before. Everything tasted so good again. I shovelled my meals in, it was so tasty. My eating didn't keep on increasing as I grew used to the true flavour of foods but I did start eating more. I didn't gain wieght, on the contrary, I lost weight as I became more active again.

Vitamin/mineral supplements won't make a person hungry. Are you just very hungry or are you actually over-eating & gaining too much weight?

Thank you all for replying, I will be having my
blood test in a few weeks to see if this is the right dosage and it will be interesting to see if I'm taking too much. That is a very interesting thought. IsoM, I haven't lost any weight but
was afraid to get on the scale for awhile fearing
what these weeks of pigging out are doing but I did the other day and I haven't gained anything to my surprise. I thought maybe my scale was broken. I haven't felt too active though. I hope if I'm taking too much I will be okay to wait a few weeks or would it be doing some damage to me?
Also, I have been on synthroid for 3 years and
I still don't have much energy and does it seem normal that about once or twice a year I need my dose increased? Does that happen to alot of hypothyroids or is it uncommon? Does anyone else know? Thanks again

Lissy, many doctors are fairly cautious about the amount of hormone to give their patients. Most are women getting close to menopause & the lower the TSH level is (meaning the greater the thyroxine levels are) the more calcium is drawn from the bones. Untreated hyperthyroidism can rapidly lead to bone weakness, so doctors are reluctant to be too aggressive in treating an underactive thyroid.

Perhaps you're being mildly under-treated if you still have no energy & it needs adjusting often. What are your latest TSH levels?

Yes, it could be you have been undertreated.

I wonder, too, if there is an episodic nature to the worsening of your symptoms. I wonder if that could be due to other factors stressing your immune system.
