PAXIL - sexual dysfunction !

Posted by ben on October 28, 2001, at 14:00:31

I am taking Paxil (30 mg/d) since spring after trying many other ADs. I think it works better (for me) than the others (Celexa, Efexor, Zoloft, Trimipramine...) against depression but I developed real sexual dysfunction. This makes me very sad. And I gain weight and feel tired. I wouldt stop this med because it works but the side effects are nasty. I hadnt such sexual problems with any AD before. The strange thing about Paxil was my increased libido at the beginning of taking it (perhaps it was triggered by coming of high doses of Celexa at the same time 80 mg) What could I do ?

Many thanks

Ben

I'm not sure what sexual dysfunction you're experiencing, but I can take a good guess. Delayed ejaculation? Paxil is used as a treatment sometimes for people who have "stamina" issues. It works very effectively for increasing stamina. In a lot of situations, too effectively. It gets really hard to hit the O. Gets very frustrating and isn't cool. You could try lowering the dose. If that doesn't help and you've had enough, try another SSRI. When getting off Paxil I'd recommend lowering the dose very slowly and adding something like prozac to help the withdrawal symptoms that a lot of people have. Horrible withdrawal from my experience - depersonalization, out of touch with the world, extreme anxiety, feeling like I was permantently messed up from Paxil. Anyways, hope you can find a solution.

Thanks for yours suggestions.
The sexual dysfunctin developed gradualy. Firts I had a very delayed orgasm (hard to reach it) and then erectile dysfunction.
I guess adding Buspar (buspirone) could be a try worth because I suffer also of bruxism (triggered by the paroxetine) in which buspirone may help ?! Bupropion isnt pais in my country by the assurance. Dopamin agonists could be a solution too, but I am scared of Bromocriptine (and others) because they have awful side effects (nausea, psychosis etc.). What about Trazadone ? Is it very sedating ? I had allways trouble with sedating ADs !

First of all, do not discontinue the Paxil! You have tried several other drugs already so if you stop Paxil, you might not find another drug to work.

As Chivalry said, you can try adding Wellbutrin or buspirone. Trazodone could also help. Also, Viagra could be a good choice. I personally take Ginkgo Biloba which is helpful for that problem. (I take 30 mg Celexa). Take 120 mg Ginkgo twice a day (total of 240 mg per day). Give it 2 weeks to see if it helps. The only precaution for Ginkgo is that it is an anticoagulant so you shouldn't take it if you have a bleeding problem.
