I need an Effexor-sism! Someone call a priest!

Posted by Caboomba on September 1, 2001, at 4:17:02

I hear a strange electrical buzzing/rattling
sound when I shift my eyes and the floor
seems to slide slightly back and forth.
I've been off my daily dose of 150 mgs
Effexor for four days now (or is it five?).
Similar symptoms occured when I first
reduced 225mg to 150 mgs because of
becomming constantly jazzed up and
severely constipated. I've almost had
to place my life on hold.

I wasn't until I discovered this site that
I realized I wasn't going mad! I first
suspected my low dose of 5mg Ambien for
sleep was the culprit but now I know.
Is this as bad as it gets or do I need
to brace myself for the worst?

Thank you all for being there!

Caboomba,
Your withdrawal experience is not unusual. There are some things you can do to make it easier though.

1. Take Prozac for a week, then stop. Unlike Effexor, it has a very long half life and will allow you to naturally withdraw very slowly. You may still experience some weirdness, but much milder.

2. Get back on Effexor and ween off it very slowly in very small increments. For example, decrease the dosage by about 25mg every four days or so. The slower you ween, and the smaller the steps you take, the better.

3. I don't know much about it, but in Dr Bob's Tips a doctor who was withdrawing from Effexor himself found Benadryl helpful.

I think the best bet would be a combination of #1 and #2 above. Decrease the Effexor slowly, with a little bit of Prozac in the background.

I don't have any more energy today and I am very tired. So, my advice - smoke some crack!

Good luck!

4 (or 5) days without the drug, good god! you are gonna die!

heh, heh.

actually, at this point, i might agree with the prozac addition but NOT taking any more effexor (even small increments). i think you are most of the way through the bad times so just go with out it. i would tend to think from what i've read here that taking effexor again would run you the risk of re-visiting the same 4 (to 5?) days of joy you've just gone through.

however, if your head starts to do 360 degree turns on your neck, you might want to re-visit taking the effexor again.
