best for controlling anger? That seems to be my main problem... being angry or annoyed all the time. Or is that usually the result of another disorder? This is all new to me. I want to talk to my doctor but I want some information before I do. How do I know if I need seratonin or dopamine "assistance". Thanks in advance.

Hi,
first, try to exclude any other cause of the irritability: hormonal imbalances, bad sleep habits, situations which especially trigger anger and irritation, etc. Get yourself educated a bit about the emotion of anger. for example, read Prisoners of Hate by dr.Aaron Beck, etc.
generally speaking, increasing serotonin availability in the body could have a 'calming' effect on you if you are an achiever, but you might have a totally opposite reaction if you are more of a submissive type.
regards,
mila

Anger tends to make me think this might be psychological in nature. Till you know for sure
if this is pscychlogical or medical or a mix it is pointless to talk about treatments. You canot treat the casue if you don't know the cause. Get a consult with a doc.James

It could be a spin-off of an anxiety disorder I suppose.
It's my understanding that anger managements problems are more in the realm of therapy than medical treatment, though such therapy could be greatly facilitated by medications.

> I believe that anger, irritation on a fairly constant and non-situation specific basis can indeed be physical. I've had it as a side effect from different meds. Rage I believe can be a form on mania--treatable by your mood stabilizers. Also, hormones can cause rage as can herpes outbreaks. My test is if I have a "mood shopping for a situation to pin itself on" then it's chemical. When I was on Effexor I completely lost my temper--meaning it went away. This was my normal temper. It was odd to just not understand what the fuss was about when other people became irritable. Of course, off the Effexor my normal temper came back. Mine hasn't been that bad normally, but meds can exacerbate it. Then I have to weigh the cost of the temper to my husband and kids and consider giving up the med. Good luck.

I have mentioned on this board that I have been plagued with anger problems all of my life. I have recently been diagnosed BP type 2 by a new psychiatrist. I'm now being treated by first depakote and recently lamictal for the down periods that wouldn't go away. This is not necessarily what is going on with you, but to let you know that there could be physical reasons that you are having anger problems. PS. This is not the first psychiatrist or psychologist that I have ever seen.
Good luck!

099 had a good question. How do you know which one needs to be treated. Zoloft & Celexa did nothing to help me. Zoloft turned me into a walking zombie (92 lbs., doc upped me to 150mg). When I could no longer even enjoy the sunshine & the birds, then didn't have money for my co-pay, and went off Zoloft cold turkey, I experienced bad withdrawals.
-My family doctor put me on Celexa.
-I finally talked to my psych doctor again, and he put me on Remeron, which affects both dopamine & serotonin. I've been living a depressed hell for almost 2 years and didn't even know it. Until I tried the Remeron. And now on the Remeron (actually I only started it, and realize there is an adjustment period), I don't want to give up this good feeling.
-Does anyone know how these chemicals actually effect your brain. Or where I can find good research information regarding depression? I am aware of receptors, but if I am going to be living with AD's I want to find out more.-This board is a great help, and thanks in advance for any information or help someone can give me.
-take care- :-)Smiley

The best information you could possibly find is right here on Dr. Bob's Psychopharmacology Tips.

A while ago I was thinking: what is better for social phobia traits a sedative or a stimulant?. Sometimes it seems a stimulant can put someone in a better state to "face" what he/she fears (public speaking, phone calls, emails from important people). I mean...like a no-chicken out drug :-)
On the other hand a sedative (like xanax) canut you ina more "social" state (I think many people use GHB for this but I have never tried it).
Thanks
