I currently am on elavil. I have tried the SSRI's but they caused agitation, nervousness, aggressiveness - Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Serzone. I have also tried St. John's Wort (same effect as SSRIs), trytophan (same again) and SAM-e (upset stomach, heart problems). I also tried imipramine as my mother had been on this medication. Also Desyrel (tried to convert to it while weaning off Elavil and crashed - also did not help my sleep or sex life).
The tried and true remedy for me has been Elavil but I don't like the carbohydrate cravings which caused a 20-25 lb weight gain. It is great for my sleep and anxiety which are important to me to keep.
I have read the archives about Remeron but Canada does not have it yet (at least that is what the pharmacist has said).
Would doxepin be comparable to the Elavil? Does it target the same receptors as Elavil? It sounds like it helps with sleep and anxiety and if it does not give me carbohydrate cravings, I would like to give it a try.
That's when I sat down here and typed this. I figure that there are more people on here who are as knowledgeable as the pharmacists. First hand experience goes a long way. So hopefully, I will get some feedback from you guys.
Thanks in advance.

Bee - I don't see Effexor XR in your list. At higher doses it has both SRI and NRI properties, making it like a TCA (like Elavil) without the big time sedation and decreased risk of cardiac problems, but I can't guarantee it will help your sex life. Do give the Effexor XR a proper trial of 8 weeks. The dose should be raised relatively slowly to about 225mg or 300mg per day to get both of the above mentioned effects. Ask your doc about this.
Sounds like you would probably be a good candidate for reboxetine, but we don't have that in Canada, either (sigh). I guess we have to let the Europeans and Yanks be our guinea pigs before they allow these new drugs into Canada ;^)

Cam
Just typed my reply and promptly lost it!! Maybe its time to go to bed. Oh well, try again.
I haven't tried Effexor XR. Tried Effexor but ran into the same problems as the other SSRI's; aggression being a big one. I will still do some reading on the XR. Who knows until you try. I don't feel optimistic about it but I'll, at least, do some reading on it.
You would figure that by now, I have been hit across the head with a 2X4 plenty of times and would realize that this lovely disease is not going away (I've given it plenty of tries!!). But if you don't try, how will you know? It may work. But thanks for the replies. It helps knowing there are others out there that have info.

Maybe it's time to visit the family in England (ha ha).

Bee,
Dr. Jones claims that Remeron is now approved for use in Canada.
