I don't know if this question is pertinent to this site or not...let's give it a try.
I suffer from severe clinical depression and was being treated (successfully, for the first time in 10 years)
with Prozac 80mg and cytomel, which is a T3 thyroid drug. Unfortunately, it is rather outdated as thyroid drugs
go, and has been discontinued in Canada. Not because of a problem...purely as financial decision on the drug company's part.
Does anyone know of any other drugs which work on T3 (not T4). Or perhaps you know how to go about getting a prescription drug brought into Canada
from the States. I thank you in advance...any help is appreciated, hopefully before things deteriorate again with
my health.
Thanks, Lisa

I am sorry that I do not have any information. However, I am hoping that you can help me. My doctor put me on Cytomel last week to go with my 60mg of Prozac and my 300 mg Wellbutrin SR. He started me out at 25 mcg. How much were/are you taking? How long did it take you to see an improvement? I have been on so much it seems but nothing ever continues to work. I would appreciate any comments you could give me. Thanks, Trish

I take 25 mcg of Synthroid (T4) and 12.5 mcg of cytomel (T3) every day. It took about a week to see a difference, and the once or twice when I forgot to refill my scrip and stopped taking it, I noticed my mood worsen within 4-5 days. I am taking it continuously, probably forever, to augment effexor.

Lisa, there is a way to legally get Canadian drugs into USA, but I'm not sure about vica-versa. You might have to call customs, a pharmacy, or your doc might know. Into USA it involves filling out a special customs form by the doc which allows him/her to have a pharmacy ship it across the border. Might work in advance, don't know. Another thing to try is an overseas mailorder pharmacy. Go to http://pharmaworld.com. Then choose the send email contact us address and send them an email with your product inquiry. They don't list their drugs at the website, you have to email and inquire. I don't know. They do have most drugs from around the world. If they have it, they'll let you know within a day. Hope it works out for you one way or the other.

the http:pharmaworld.com site didn't work.
I'm interested in other medications from Canada (I
heard it is much cheaper). Any country is OK. Just
so it's do-able and reliable and good quality.

I have not ordered it yet, so know little about it. Lita Lee says it is legal to order it to the U.S. from Mexico. Lita Lee can be reached at 541-937-1123. Hope this information helps you!

Cytomel is simply a brand name synthetic T3 thyroid hormone. It is available in the US. Is it not available in Canada? Or perhaps it is marketed under a different name there?
Also, if it isn't available in Canada, there may be another brand of T3 that you can use. With thyroid hormones, it is important that you use a brand name and stick to the same brand, as minute variations from brand to brand can make a difference in your levels. Generics in thyroid hormones are not considered reliable.

Noa & John - Cytomel™ was available in Canada until last year. I was told that they stopped marketing it because there was not enough demand for it (which I find hard to believe with the number of docs who asked me how to get ahold of some). We can order Cytomel from the U.S. if the doc writes Health Canada requesting it (ie need to fill out a form). I have not ordered it, but I have talked to Health Canada and it does seem fairly simple to order (except that most drug plans will not pay for it).
I have also heard that it was being remarketed in Canada, but I don't know the status right now. In place of it we are using Thyroid Hormone™ tablets with are some animal's dessicated thyroids. I believe that about 30mg Thyroid Hormone tablets contain 10mcg to 15mcg of T3 (liothyroxine) and 50mcg 0f T4 (levothyroxine) or equivalent to about 30mg of thyroglobulin. It's not as "clean" a drug as Cytomel (ie has more side effects because of the T4 component), but I have only had one person who could not switch from Cytomel to Thyroid Hormone (2.5mcg to 5mcg of Cytomel is approx. equivalent to 15mg of Thyroid Hormone or so it seems - this is the conversion we have used but it may not be the same for everyone - Your Mileage May Vary).
Hope this helps, Noa - Cam.

Sorry to mislead you, guys. I guess that Cytomel was reintroduced into Canada about 6 months ago. Another company is marketing it. Both 5mcg and 25mcg strengths are available. - Cam
