vivid dreams on celexa

Posted by anma on May 26, 2000, at 15:47:17

I was wondering if anyone else taking celexa has had any strange and vivid dreams? I've been taking celexa about 2 months and I have always had dreams about ex lovers and people from my past, but they seem to be more frequent and very vivid.

I have never taken celexa, but have had this effect from other SSRIs and from effexor.

I enjoy my Effexor dreams, although occasionally I do have nightmares. Renee N

I have also had some really frightening dreams on Celexa, not ones that I enjoy. The last one I had that i can remember(I forget most of them within a few hours) was particularly gruesome and violent.

I can rememeber have these dreams on other meds too, so I know it isn't just with Celexa. I guess any medication that changes your brain chemistry can do this.

My husband always attibutes these dreams to eating too late at night and I think there is some truth to this theory. If your dreams coincide with late night eating, especially unusual foods, it might be triggered by that.

P.S. Before drugs, my dreams were rather weird too. Not all the time but during stressful times, so it might just be my brain chemistry or those of us with derpession.

I kind of like most of mine. It's like that movie Total Recall with Arnold Schwarznager. I'm looking forward to increasing the dose to theurapetic levels next month. I want the line to blur so much I experience a real sexual experience while dreaming. Heh.. weeeeeeeeeee!

Hmmm!!! I get seriously vivid dreams at the moment (when I do get to sleep that is). I've always been a lucid / vivid dreamer, but at the moment it's more than I can cope with. Last night all my friends died of drugs over doses, and it seemed so damned real... I love dreaming, but at the moment they're driving me... mad!

I kind of envy you "guys" and your vivid dreams. I have tried for years to remember/study my dreams without much success. On Effexor I had much more vivid dreams but had to stop it because of other side effects. Why don't you get some books and take advantage of your vivid dreams to study them? One of the best that I know of is Dr Corriere and Hart's "The Dream Makers, Discovering Your Breakthrough Dreams". Unfortunately, its out of print. If you could figure out why you make these horribly nasty nightmares, maybe you wouldn't need AD's at all. ??

Please, please do not envy me my dreams... I adore dreaming, but the effexor dreams have been so vivid / lucid and... just awful. Imagine nearly all your friends dying... and not knowing whether it was real or not,and having the images inplanted in your brain of their dying faces all day. These dreams are just so damned bad, no one should feel jealous of them.

I follow what your are saying. Still, it seems most remarkable that some part of your brain would do such a thing to you. I would think it extremely important to find out why. The book i mentioned seems to be excellant for dealing with the mean dark nasties...

"if life gives you lemons make lemonade(don't squeeze them in your eye!)

I sorry, that is a bit corny...i guess i will leave it in ...

I just started taking clexa, the benefits outweight the negatives, but I can defintily notice a difference in my dreams after only 4 days on 10mg doses. I never really recalled my dreams before and starting celexa. The dreams seem to be a double edge sword. They're interesting and most not that scary but still kinda wierd. I dreamt I tried to shave my eyelashes off and kept cutting my eyeball and woke up kinda paniced and yelling last night after a dream about my girlfriend worrying that we didn't have souls. I guess I myself view dreams as insight into your waking life though or if nothing else pull certain events out of the subconscious. I find the dreams a little scary but also theroputic, although I have had a lot more trouble falling asleep and was wondering if anyone else was having this problem.

I've been taking 40mg of Celexa a day for over 6 months now and I've had the side effect for the whole 6 months. So theres no guaruntee that the side effect will go away in the first few weeks. Also after I started taking it at night the dreams became more vivid and frequent (which is why I still take it at night :)

Just to add a note about my experience with vivid dreams on Celexa. My previous message probably doesnt speak for everybody (in perticular my enjoyment of the dreams, I do enjoy all of them, even the scary ones, after reflection) for example while taking a nap over my girlfriend's I dreamed I took a bite out of someone's jugular and was spitting out blood. I awoke noticing that I'd been spitting out regular old spit all over my shirt :)

I took one Celexa pill a week ago and had to stop immediately because I was having a terrible reaction to it... so I've been on Ativan every day, which has the benefit of me falling asleep and not remembering my dreams at all (a big change from my pre-Celexa existence). Didn't take the Ativan yesterday, and I had very detailed, clear dreams involving people I knew and memories of past places and situations. I woke up twice during these, the first time I felt a great sense of relief (I'd been worried that if I got the vivid dreams, they would be nightmares). But the second time I fell asleep, I woke up mentally but my body didn't follow, and I noticed I was having a hard time breathing- this is apparently called sleep paralysis/apnea- and it scared the shit out of me. I got a jolt of adrenaline and it enabled me to move. I don't know if I was in the midst of a panic attack during this time, which could explain the lack of respiration, but I'll tell you something, I got up and took the Ativan and I'm damn well not trying to go off it for at least another week. God damn SSRIs.
