I was just wondering if excessive eating of cookies and icecream is related to AD's? I'm not usually a big eater of these things but lately it seems to be all i want. No meat and potatoes, no salads, just give me cookies and icecream. What's with that--Cam/Greg?????
My waistline is the size of jupiter. Afraid it's going to get worse.

Tina,
I don't know if it's caused by the Xanax, but ever since starting it during those times when I get hungry I usually want sweets. Cookies, ice cream, candy. I also have this thing for peanut butter, straight out of the jar with a spoon. I've always been a sugar junkie though. Could be the Celexa, but I've never taken it so I really don't know about that. You might possibly do a search on both the meds and see if increased appetite or craving for sweets is a possible side effect. I think I'll check out the Xanax. I know when I was on Remeron (until recently) all I wanted to do was eat...and sleep. Let me know what you find out and I'll do the same.Remember, Jupiter when seen from Earth thru a telescope is really small, maybe it's your big heart that you're noticing.
Hugs,

Tina:
I am not Cam or Greg, but I do know exactly what you are experiencing. I take Paxil, not Celexa, but both seem to have the same side effect. An unbelievable craving for carbs and sweets. And yes it will cause a weight gain if you don't get a grip on it right now! I have gained over 20 pounds on Paxil over a 12 month period. My best friend, who took Celexa, gained 40 pounds in about 3 months. She actually went off the Celexa and is now trying to cope with her depression med free. Hers was brought on by grief, her husband dropped dead of a heart attack in the shower in May 1999 at 44 years old. She is a letter carrier for the post office and found the excess weight almost impossible to manage with her job. She was (and still is) suffering from ankle, knee, hip and foot pain...shortness of breath...so she gave up the ADs so she can get control of her weight. She cries alot...she doesn't go out socially at all...she is angry and irritable...she doesn't know if she can take much more.....I feel useless as far as helping her out.
Whoa..way off topic!! sorry!! Bottom line...YES the SSRIs can make you want to pig out and will make you fat if you are not very very careful. As Cam always advises...watch your diet, exersize regularly and vigorously (ewwwwwww!!!! I'd rather eat the ice cream!! 8) Which is why I haven't lost the 25 pounds yet!)
Hope things improve for you soon..hang in there!!

Thanks guys, nice to know I'm not going mad. The only problem is I don't have ANY desire to exercise. I used to be such a health freak, working out, jogging every a.m. and lifting weights 3 times a week. The depression is causing my motivation for activity to sink into oblivion but the meds are making me pig-out. What's a girl to do??? P.S. Thanks for the big heart comment Greg, you always know just what to say.How are the kids?--Tina

Tina-
Chocolate Chip cookies with mugs of milk. I *could*
eat an entire package at one sitting.Chocolate Peanutbutter ice cream, enough said.
These have always been a weakness. A few years ago
I was over 200#. I stopped buying the cookies
& ice cream (if they aren't here I can't eat them),
exercised fanatically, and dropped 40 lbs. This
past year I became apathetic, stopped exercising,
and let my cravings take control. I was up to 200#
pretty quickly.During my latest & greatest plumment into the dark
side this year I lived almost exclusively
on raisin bran cereal, it's still the staple of
my diet (easy, quick, no decisions, and somewhat
nutricious). I'm at 180# now.
I take Celexa also. For the first several weeks
nausea prevented me from eating too much. The nausea
is gone now but I have still been able to control
my craving for sweets. The sweets make us feel good.
I have found that the best way to deal with the
cravings is to set a limit-I can have ice cream
on Sat eve. Or to make the cookies and ice cream
a 'reward' for an accomplishment-I walked/ran/swam
today so I 'earned' my milk and cookies. As I've said before, for me the Celexa has helped
with mood but it has not made a dent in my lethargy.
In the past 2 weeks I have begun to exercise. It
was not easy. I began with 1 15min walk/day. Then
2 15min walks/day. Now I am trying to go to my gym 3 days
a week and use the rowing machine. I still go
on my walks too. It's still a struggle, but I am
beginning to look forward to the exercise.

Hey Greg: Last night was again horrible. I was woken twice by severe panic attacks. After the 2nd one I absolutely couldn't go back to sleep. I just sat in bed shivering and anxious trying to write it all down(keeping a symptom journal for psychopharmacologist I'm seeing next week) Even today I'm still feeling very shaky. It's the worst it's ever been and I'm scared. I'm just trying to get through the next week till I see this psychopharm guy and can get the right help. All you guys here have given me the courage to seek help and not to give up til I get it. The depression was lifting slowly but these panic attacks are bringing it back. Ican't even sit in my own house without having an attack let alone go anywhere. But. like you said to Bonnie, I'm not going to waste any more years of my life being unhappy and not living, I've already wasted 12. I WILL get help and with help from you guys I'll get better, I know it. Glad to hear your kids are doing well. They're lucky to have you as a dad.
Hugs
Tina

Tina, (Night Owl)
I may have asked you this before, but seeing as how a good memory is NOT my strong point, are you taking anything for your insomnia? If not, it's definitely something to talk about with your psychopharmacologist when you see him/her. This lack of sleep is not good for your frame of mind and I'm concerned where your headed. Try to keep up the positive attitude, it may not be easy, but like the advise here, at least it's free.
