You're right! Cindy McCain's problem is not relevant to her husband's political views.
Historically speaking:
1) Barbara Bush was addicted to booze and Percodans.
2) Rosalyn Carter was addicted to diet pills (amphetamines).
3) Nancy Reagan was addicted to Bloomingdales (NYC).

For me, the addiction is not an issue. But as a leader of a major charitable organization, to have used her position to steal, even if it was under the influence of her addiction, IS an issue because she will be in a position of having lots of access to information and power.

Actually, tho, for me it isn't much of an issue, becuase He is way too conservative for my political taste anyway.

///Uh....I have *never* heard *anything* about Barbara Bush being addicted to anything, but good literature, perhaps! Could you possibly be confusing her with Betty Ford??

Uh, oh, you're right! My apologies to Mrs. Bush.
It was Betty Ford who was the pill-popping boozer, little wonder married to a political blunder;i.e., Gerald.
I happen to admire Betty Ford for her courage and honesty.

Think any of these women, and there were others, are killing the pain of some god awful self-sacrifice?

Interesting question, Phil. I think public life requires some ability to cut off feelings. It seems some of the men have done this with the help of sexual acting out. And, perhaps the women have done this by deadening the feelings with substances.

Also, these days, it seems the women behind the men have to do the impossible--fulfill all kinds of conflicting expectations: Be smart and accomplished career-wise, but be a good close-to-home Mom. Be demure and well-spoken at the same time. Be beutiful and fashionable but not too much so. Have ideas of one's own, but not be too assertive. Be comfortable being in the public eye and not be too private, but not be too public, either.

And think of all the incessant smiling, handshaking, and small talk! Don't you think they just want to go out by themselves one day wearing sweat pants and no make up?

////Actually, I think Barbara Bush did some of that while her husband was in office! She, of all the First Ladies, was probably the most natural and unaffected, imho.
As for the FL's who bent the elbow, don't forget poor Kitty Dukakis. I'll never forget the day I heard on the car radio that she had been rushed to the hospital for drinking rubbing alcohol............oh my, so sad. But then, of course, she was married to Michael.............

I think I remember, too, that because Michael had made sure to remove alcoholic beverages from the house, she resorted to all kinds of stuff. What comes to my memory is stuff like Nyquil.

Maybe this has been discussed, but I've wondered why they didn't remove Robatussin DM from the shelves when the teeny boppers started getting "drunk" on it. I'm told, however, that you can get high on anything if you take enough of it - one being Dramamene. Guess one could then travel around the world, huh?:) Actually, I guess I did once read that you can get intoxicated on water. Something about the body's equalibrium? Anyway - Kitty. I remember seeing her on television after Michael had secured the nomination and someone opened a bottle of champagne and offered some to both of them to celebrate the victory - she refused the goblet and then after a look from her husband, took it, but I never saw her drink from it, as I can recall. I knew right then, there was a problem of some sort. I hope she's doing well now. Haven't heard anything about her for a long time, so no news is good news, perhaps.

Re: Robitussin DM--where I lived, they did put it behind the counter--you have to ask for the pharmacist for it. The stupid thing is, though, the "store brand" is still on the shelf!

Not to blast Kazoo, because we all make mistakes, but see how easily rumors about public officials can get started? What about all the people who only read the first post in this thread?

I've been involved in politics, and I can see why it's hard to find anyone with integrity who wants to run for office--if they can't find a skeleton in your closet, they'll put one there!!
