Interesting question, Phil. I think public life requires some ability to cut off feelings. It seems some of the men have done this with the help of sexual acting out. And, perhaps the women have done this by deadening the feelings with substances. Also, these days, it seems the women behind the men have to do the impossible--fulfill all kinds of conflicting expectations: Be smart and accomplished career-wise, but be a good close-to-home Mom. Be demure and well-spoken at the same time. Be beutiful and fashionable but not too much so. Have ideas of one's own, but not be too assertive. Be comfortable being in the public eye and not be too private, but not be too public, either.
And think of all the incessant smiling, handshaking, and small talk! Don't you think they just want to go out by themselves one day wearing sweat pants and no make up?
