Fish Oil + Evening Primrose WORKS!!!!

Posted by jay on February 26, 2002, at 4:44:40

I know there has been talk of fish oil use on here, but after further research, the *most* effective combo of fatty acids is the EPA in fish oil, and the fatty acids in either evening primrose, flax, or hemp. (Most plant based oils.)
The MAJOR benefits I have found with this combo is a)lifting of depression, better cognitive function b) weight loss.

From my own experience, the effect of combining these, usually in a ratio of 2x fish oil, 1 x plant based oil. Dr. Michael Norden advocates this, as do many other docs. You can even use these if you are on meds. (Ask your doc, for sure though.) So, I take 4 grams of fish oil, and 1-2 grams of Evening Primrose 2x a day. You can start slower.

The research concludes just fish oil or a plant oil alone is not anywhere near as powerful as the combination.

Further comments welcomed!
Jay

Hi Jay,
I have been hearing a lot about the use of fish oil to help combat depression. I have been leary to try it because I've tried SO many things with zero results and I'm tired of wasting my money. Could you please share with me the brands of supplements you use? What kind of fish oil are you referring to? How long did it take for it to "kick in"? Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Supplements can be expensive. I find them a lot cheaper on the net. iherb.com has been both cheap and reliable.

Hi Trish

I am from Canada, and you may or may not have the same brands. But, I have found most brands work well, because unlike herbs, fish oil and other oils are pretty much equal.

I use a brand called Jamieson, but the most important thing is the amounts. It may be different for everyone, and again, I would highly suggest adding a "plant" oil, like Evening Primrose, as it is a *must* to use with the fish oil.

I take 4 grams of fish oil, 2x a day, and I take 2 grams of Evening Primrose, 2x a day. I would start off with just taking each 1x a day. As always, consult with your doctor. I take it with medication, and my doc o.k.'s it.

You should notice some good effects within the first few days, but you have to maintain taking it, as the effects don't last. (They are more like food, really)

I also take Effexor XR, Zyprexa, and Clonazepam, but it was this addition that made a difference. Give it a shot, as it's fairly cheap, and fairly safe.

Take care...

James

Hi,

I knew I'd remembered reading something about Vitimin A toxicity ( to the liver)in large amounts- such as those found in cod-liver oil etc.
Here's a copy of the recommended doses:

(don't want to be a scaremonger or anything, because I take it too- but I did reduce the amount somewhat after reading this)

Vitamin A (ie, retinol) - Found in green and yellow vegetables, liver, egg yolks, fish oil, and margarine
US recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is 5000 IU (2500 IU for children aged 1-4 years).

Supplements usually are 10,000-50,000 IU per capsule. Fish-liver oils may contain more than 180,000 IU/g.

Acute toxic dose is 25,000 IU/kg, and chronic toxic dose is 4000 IU/kg every day for 6-15 months.

Beta-carotene (ie, provitamin A) is converted to retinol but not rapidly enough for acute toxicity. Vitamin A is highly teratogenic in pregnancy; however, it also is a cofactor in night vision and bone growth.

I use the Omega-3 Fatty Acids from Trader Joe's. I think it's called Trader Darwin's Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Andrew Stoll, M.D., who wrote "The Omega-3 Connection," recommends that brand also.

I buy my evening primrose oil at Trader Joe's, but I don't know whether that brand is as good as their Omega-3 FA's.

Which one of these oils can make you stinky?

I took Super Primrose 1300 mg Hexane Free Evening Primrose Oil Softgels and Omega-3 Fish Oil Concentrate 1000 mg Softgels in combination for a few days to hopefully lube up my joints after taking for Topamax 5 months has been drying them out and making them VERY painful. Well, after taking my shoes off one night and noticing an unpleasant odor, I didn't know what vitamin was to blame, since I didn't have this odor before taking the vitamins. I have since cut out the fish oil and am going to see if it was the culprit!

Anyone know if fish oil can make you a little stinky?

Hi Jet,

Sorry that you stink. Good thing we are talking over the internet. ;)
Just kidding.

I have been on heavy Topamax (400 mg) for a while now and am developing a really
bad re-emmergence of some joint pain in my hands and also some
numbing and vascular sensitivity. Is there some known issue with
Topamax? I had this problem really bad 3 years ago and I also took
Flax Seed oil and it went away (with no foul odor - Spectrum brand).

Thanks for any information,
John

Hi Jet. What kind of smell is it? Is it a fishy smell or some other kind of smell? I've had problems with fish oil burps, so several people here suggested flax oil instead.

I haven't ever taken Topamax, but several of the SSRIs, except for Zoloft, gave me severe joint pains.

I've had difficulties retaining friends and relationships ever since I took to smearing my body from head to toe with tuna and cod-liver oil.Perhaps I should switch to evening-primrose?

Think you're pretty funny huh mister? Just Kidding :) Well I would come back with a great come back, but this Topastupid medicine has made me just that - stupid. I used to be pretty quick on my feet, but not any more. But it has made the difference in me wanting to get up in the morning or stay in bed, so I am trying to live with all of the negative side-effects.

As far as the drying out goes, how did you take the flax oil? By pill or by putting it in juice? I currently am grinding up the seeds and drinking them in juice, but I don't think that will have the same effect on the joints as the oil will have.

Also - I don't take anything else for depression. I still swing some, just not as back as before Topa. What do you suggest? I tried many AD's before Topa and none worked, but I didn't try Serzone. Do you suggest going on another AC? I am up for any suggestions to bring to my pdoc. He will let me try anything.

Thanks for the help John.

Colin - Try the Albacore Tuna on your body

Colin:

May I suggest the Albacore Tuna for this purpose? Due to its white colored meat, Albacore is also called " the chicken of the sea". As a canned product it is quite popular in the States, where it is marketed as "White Tuna". The meat has a somewhat dry of texture, and the taste comes close to the taste of chicken meat.

This may not be as "smelly" as it's sister tuna.

Hi Jet,

Sorry this is a little long, I'm a little
hypomanic (super-duper energy from manic
depression). Hope this doesn't confuse you.

oils:

I found the pills to be too light weight.

Need to take too many to get a therapeutic dose.
I also worry about quality control if the pills
aren't chilled ya know.

Here is what I do:

I go to a really good health food store with a
refrigerator and I buy a bottle of "Spectrum brand"
cold pressed Flax Seed oil. They also have something
some good shit called "Essential Max" which is a good blend
if my memory serves me correct of the secret sauce in Flax
oils combined with the secret sauce in Evening Primrose oil rolled into one
bottle! They seem to be pushing this brand. I by this
in Texas, I don't know if they have it elsewhere.
Anyways I guess you can sprinkle it on nuts or whatever, but
I'm no whimp, (Ok, I admit, I'm no cook), so I take 2 tablespoons,
(which is like 8 of those stupid pills), and I just plug my nose and
down the shoot she goes. Chase it with a glass of water.
Trial and error to find the 2 tablespoons
for an effective dose. Also take anti-oxidants vitamin E
and C for neuroprotections (lipid peroxidation from oils).
Fish oils are good for mood, ya know!
No stinking. Or at least no subjective
complaint of stinking from friends and family.

Anti-depressants:

Ok, now onto the Anti-depressants. Topamax is a mood
stabilizer, but its making you stupid. This is a common
side effect. Not acceptable, we need to fix this.
I'm sorry for your plight.

1 important question:

which Ads have you taken so far with no or
crappy response?

I'm thinking maybe we should stick with the mood
stabilizers given success on Topamax. A good medicine
with low side effects and few complaints of stupidity
and an excellent anti-depressant profile (a lot of people
get a very robust response after many failures on other
medicines) is Lamictal (this is my bread and butter
so I am a bit biased). Lamictal is also in the mood
stabilizer class.

Now there is one downside to Lamictal which you
might be scare of. And that is when you start the
medicine, there is a chance that you will get some
irritation on your skin. This generally subsides
but you need to titrate the dose of the medicine
up *very carefully*. Hopefully your pdoc has some
experience with this medicine. It takes a few months
too. Other side effects as you bump the dose may
include a little dizziness (sorry, but it does go
away). Fortunately when you get to the therapeutic
range the incidence of side effects tends to be
low. No sexual dysfunction, etc. May be able to
dump the Topamax. I take 400 mg of Topamax with
150 mg of Lamictal and I am not dumb on Topamax.
I also take some Serzone for headaches and the
Lamictal seems to be preventing it from making
me dumb like Serzone made me REALLY dumb last time
I took it, again I'm only one data point.

So, these are just my opinions.

Other options maybe you havent tried are low
dose medicines like Zyprexa. Good for anxiety.

I guess it would be good to see the list of
medicines you took and the problems you had.

Good luck,
John

Hi Jet,

I read your posts below regarding the severity of
your skin condition, I wouldn't recommend a Lamictal
trial, it wouldn't seem to wise. Serzone has history
of causing brain fog so you may want to stay away from that one.

Hi Jet,

I inadvertently made pokes about
Topamax making you "stupid". This was a complaint
of another Topamax poster below. Getting my
flurry of Topamax stories confused. Topamax often
causes cognitive dysfunction; I hope this isn't
an issue for you. Now I feel like the dunce.

Anyways, I really hope you get your conditions
resolved. Lamictal still may be option, check with
your pdoc about side effects. Have you been dx'd
with bipolar for long? A lot of time bipolar II's
chase stand alone ADs with crappy responses before
finally finding out they need a mood stabilizer.
Depakote is another good option which you can
combine with an anti-depressant.

Best wishes,
John

About that ESSENTIALMAX product you mentioned, is it expensive? Does it have a lot of fat calories in it? I live in TX too and may be able to find it, I keep hearing so much good stuff about the AD properties of these oils I'd like to give them a run, but the evening primrose oil is so expensive I've just been using the fish oil caps fot the last week or so and so far no noticeable response.

thanks for the advice

trouble,

I can't say I can quote any prices.
What you need to do is go to a really good health food store.
Not one of those GNC deallies. A genuine health food store with
a refrigerator. Get the refrigerated bottled oil. Probably if you are taking
those pills you aren't taking a strong enough dose. Get the real
deal, the cold-pressed refrigerated oil and take 1-2 table/tea
spoons per day. If your lucky you'll notice a difference the
same day, in a few days. Definately in a few weeks. I like the
Spectrum brand, they are well reputed.

Best of luck,
John

What's it supposed to do?

Hey, John:

I just posted about joint pain I'm having with Gabitril. Did you say you had some with Topomax or some other drug? Did someone? Whoa--I need to get off this site; I can't remember what I've read with whose name on it when. That's a side effect of Psycho-Babble, I'm afraid, not any meds.

I had a liver test yesterday, and I'll get the results today. If I'm fine, I'm going to try the vitamins and stinky stuff and calmax, do a slow taper off Serzone, stop the Gabitril, and maybe try the stuff we've been talking about that begins with an R. Oh, Remeron, right.

You know, I have gotten so used to the brain fog with Serzone that I actually thought my age was the culprit in forgetting what I was going to say next. I'll be 40 in October. Really? Yes. Funny, you look like you're about 32. Yes, everyone tells me that.

Hmmm...maybe Zyprexa IS in order.

Anyway, I think everyone on the discussion board should thank me. I am a college English professor and professional writer, and I have not yet chastised a single person for poor spelling and grammar. Yes, though I cringe with every "it's" that should not have an apostrophe, I am coping.

With admiration and affection,

the beard

P.S. I don't really have a beard. : -)>

So, JohnX2, you're a college prof? I thought you sounded pretty articulate, even while in a P-babble induced brain fog!

beardy,

To be honest it started to freak me out when
all these joint flare up threads popped at once.
I was experiencing this in the days just before
the threads. I know I have been nailed on
psychosomatic illness, so I don't know if this
one is just a bit of a "fever" or what.

Anyways, my pain started CONCURRENT with starting
Serzone if that is any odd-ball connection. It
has gotton much better the past day/2. I think it
was just a start up side effect from the Serzone.

BTW, I'm an engineer I don't have to know how to
spell do-do. Its funny though, my vocabulary is
really strong, but my memory gets foggy on how
to spell words. I guess its because I'm always
jabbing away, but I seldom type formal documents.
Even then I just let spell check do my work.

Best Wishes.
John

PS. take a sugar pill, I heard it alleviates
all joint pain and anguish.

other EFA ideas

In reply to Re: Fish Oil + Evening Primrose WORKS!!!!, posted by jay on February 27, 2002, at 2:39:54

I agree. Getting the Essential Fatty Acids from Fish and/or Evening Primrose oil are excellent for depression and overall health.

Another way to get those good ol' omega 3's is with flax. You can use the oil, but even better is to get fresh and preferably refrigerated flax seed and grind them up in a coffee grinder (I combine with sesame seed for calicium), add a wee bit of high mineral sea salt (skip the table salt!) and have a somewhat tasty sprinkle for salads, yogurt, etc.

About a tablespoon a day. And it's cumbersome because you really need to grind fresh each time to preserve the freshness of the omega 3 fatty acids.

Just another idea. Borage oil also has a high concentration of omega 3's, 6's, and the highest GLA. Great for PMS.

The other way to support taking fish and other oils is to cut back on the yucky oils like safflower, corn oil, etc, and of course fried foods, chips, etc. Get those EFA's in a beneficial balance.
