Poverty in a Bulimic Society

Posted by smokeymadison on December 14, 2004, at 3:48:25

Eating a can of Flavourite red beets for supper
And wondering why the line is drawn
At $350 a week for two
And wishing that
We made half that

Dreading the folded piece of paper
Taped to the door on the 5th of every month
And fearing more for the cats’ sake
Than my own
That the eviction will not happen

Receiving the knowing glances
From my psychiatrist as I ask
For samples of the pills that will keep me sane
For thirty more days
And realizing that they cannot bring peace of mind

I cannot help but ask,
Where in the fabric of American society,
In the belief that those of strong will
And those who work tirelessly towards a better life would succeed,
Did this tear form?

For it is human lives
That are consumed by the dream,
Abducted by delusions of wealth and overabundance
Only to be spat out
In this bulimic society
