Well, I'll be damned, I'm Irish-American. One side of the family is from Limerick, the other is from Skibbereen in County Cork. Both sides came over to America during the famine and settled in Ulster County in upstate New York. The patriarch on my mother's side worked as a coal miner up there, then got a job with the B&O railroad. My father's people became farmers. I have lots of cousins who are terrific, wry storytellers and one who seems to know every Irish folk song ever written. The best part of any large family get-together is when he brings out his guitar. Whenever Alyssa and I talked about kids, we agreed that if it was a boy, he'd be named Seamus, after the great Irish poet Seamus Heaney. Atticus
