There once was a boozer named Ed.
Had a beard, big nose, and bald head.
The Grape he would guzzle
And napes he would nuzzle,
And then he solved puzzles in bed.But now he struggles with dread.
The cure for his terror, the twitching and trembling,
The seizures on the horizon,
Is more of the dreadful vino;
Liter by liter, ‘til the ambulance takes him …Away.
And they say
His apartment was full of blood.Was this the same little boy in the old photo?
All dressed up in his little suit
With the short pants and the white collar?
The little boy with a dead bird,
His somber face overcast by concern?
He was holding a dove by its little feet,
And its head was dangling down.His father told him how to pose: like a hunter with his kill.
The camera clicked, and
The proud father thought
He knew his son.In the background stood the old oak the little boy liked to hug;
In the foreground sat the dog, his guardian and brother.
For ten more years they played together, and explored the neighbor’s bushes;
Then the photo went one way (into a drawer), and he went another …Away
To college. He was sixteen.
And they say
He was too young.
