I know nothing about journalism, but I've been working from home at varying degrees for years. I think there are good points and bad. It's all too easy to get distracted by clothes that need washing or things that need picking up. Or by Babble or other computer distractions.
The key for me is to turn off all the distractions I can. Turn off my email notifier. Shut the door to my study. Sit down to a chunk of work, and when I'm finished, get up and walk around a bit. Eat a snack or lunch, maybe toss those clothes in the washer. Then get back and do another chunk of work.
I've found it way more difficult to do small pieces of work at home, and way easier to do large projects. Switching gears at home leaves too much room for distraction or just plain trailing off.
Now we're back in our old office (if we ever in fact have a stable place for me there) I think I'm planning to divide my work into two categories, projects and other stuff, and only bring project work home while going in in the morning or a couple of days a week to do the other stuff.
I don't know how writing would fit into that, but if you're as prone to distraction as I am, setting up a quiet place where you can shut the door from the rest of your world might be a good idea.
