I guess what I glean from the meetings (besides the socialization aspect) is a feeling of understanding. True, addiction is just a sub-set of mental illness, but it's more complicated than that. I suppose I could receive the same level of "support" from a mental health discussion group (as in PB) but those are hard to find outside of in large cities.
