Though benzodiazepines such as diazepam or alprazolam give me the necessary "kick", willpower and motivation to do so, I've been hesitant to use them on a daily basis for fear of addiction.

Can anyone explain to my why this "paradoxical" effect happens? I mean, why, when I take a benzo (like when I used to take Ativan), which is supposed to be calming/sedating--why do I get this burst of energy? I used to save up my Ativan, not taking any during the day, and take them all at night. Then I could get my apartment cleaned, my papers for school written, etc. It always just seemed screwy to me.
