why do you hate math?

i hated it because i never learned any of the procedures. and i thought people just rote learned a bunch of facts without any understanding, which was pretty boring to me.

this site is teaching me differently, though. i get it conceptually... then the computations become faster / automated by repetition. it is okay to have a guess and get it wrong - because feedback is immediate. you need to get a certain number correct in a row (including ones you messed up in the past) in order to have demonstrated mastery. A lot of it isn't hard at all (really). it is more that it is... priming you for how to think about the next task. to make that easier.

i'm getting much faster at doing sums :) and starting to 'see' how things make 5 while simultaneously keeping track of 10's... i see how people add numbers quickly... i need much more practice... but things are starting to come together for me... and i'm only part way through year three lol...

i don't much enjoy the sums, truth be told. i like geometry more, even though i find geometry harder. i think it is just because mostly i'm doing sums at the moment. i do have to stop and think about some of them, though... odd numbers are... odd... ahaha. need to think about even numbers then adjust up and down accordingly... to make 10... rearranging... substitution... oh. hello, math.

> why don't you maybe keep this up on babble, or somewhere to check your progress....

yes. that is why i tell y'all that i'm doing this. so... if i'm tempted to not do my practice i think that someone might ask me 'how's your math practice going alex' and then i'd feel like a lazy slacker. so... when i'm tempted to not do my practice... i think of that... and it helps motivate me to do my practice. soon... i'll be able to post that i finished year three! i'm looking forward to that... so that helps motivate me to practice, too.

i've told a few people irl that i'm doing this, too. so they can also help hold me accountable. it can help to have supportive people who help remind you and encourage you. don't tell people your goals if those people aren't supportive... but then... people will eventually give up on you if they see you make a constant habit of making promises (to them, to yourself) that you don't keep...

sometimes... you only get to the enjoyment by way of the discipline...

if you want to get better at math... perhaps even learn to like it... well, you know how, now. if that was something you wanted to do. push-ups, too. these goals are easy (in a way) because it is clear whether you have made your goal or not. and because there are clear steps that can be identified along the way.

other goals are much much harder. like baseballs. doesn't mean those goals are less worthwhile or anything like that, but makes them harder. which can mean... they are tricky sorts of goals to have when you are just starting out on the path of actually doing something positive in favor of moving your life from where it is now to where it is that you want to be...
