I did a quick google, and got a bunch of hits about repairs for Cavaliers. This one has a diagnostic option, the second question down:

If you check these out, and maybe run your own search for other relevant sites, you should get an idea of whether you want to attempt it yourself.
I will warn you, though: sometimes there are little details left out. For example, I tried to replace the brake rotors on my '82 Tercel once, only to find that you needed to disassemble most of the bottom end to do it...
