Kath, you're so lucky to enjoy that pleasure.
I'm such a crybaby. I was going on a hike with my SigO, who is not a woodsperson, and it was the strangest hike.
An almost 8.5 grade, but with these large rock-steps lying almost side by side, at catty-corners, but almost the whole way (or at least as far as I got).
It was a great short (1.5 mile) hike-- not even camping, just a hike.
I got about two-thirds of the way up the first part, when we got to a short (ten-twelve steps) that was a narrow, winding dirt path along a steep drop into the valley below. I freaked out completely, after having gone most of the way (say ten of the twelve steps).
There were other such intervals ahead, I think.
I'm completely terrified of heights. Insanely so, because I have excellent balance. And it was otherwise a fun hike.
So I just turned around and went down. During that interval down, I was sure I was about to pitch over the side (for no reason, just cause) and get killed. I'm still quite bummed out about it.
And the next day, we walked across a bridge that was also exposed, over a river, that would shudder at every step. But it had a wire railing. No one with any sense would be in danger. My Sig O was tromping behind me, and our out-of-pace steps set off these waves of shuddering. I freaked again.
There also were a billion flying gnats, and the trail wasn't very pleasant. However, mostly I was just freaking because of the bridge.
So Kath, You;re so lucky to be able to enjoy the woods, and the fields, and the trails. Do you have any photos to post? I'd love to see photos of where you've been camping.
