I think it's very valuable to have an idea of what type of illness you may be experiencing. Knowing that I am BP instead of just bouncing in and out of deep depression has helped me regulate my life in relation to the BP. It has also given me the opportunity to find meds that offer at least some help.
Moreover, if I didn't know what OCD is and did not know I was experiencing it, I'd think I was going insane. Rather than trying CBT and various meds, I might have given up on everything thinking I was just nuts.
Working hard to find the right diagnosis and the correct treatment is more than just grabbing at labels. It's finding your reality, and then dealing with it.
