I would tell them that you need to quit b/c you found a job with better pay. Hey, they might even make you an offer of more $ to get you to stay.
I knew someone who worked at a library and his employers always acted like they were giving him some great gift to let him work there--even though the pay was awful. Maybe it is a library thing.
