OK,

I haven't done this in awhile so things could be different but, this is how it was in the 80's-90's.

It's important you look OK. IE: for a goth club: black, black and more black(WHAM! tee shirts or acid washed jeans are a no-no)and if you have some leather or lace or big tarneshed medallions that would be bonus.
A club kids type culb: anyhting goes and actually, the more riculous you can make your personal style the more points you get for creativity and this could even help you get in the club...
A gay club: here it's all about grooming. Are you coiffed with just the right tousled nonchalance? Did you shower twice? Is your stubble even? Is the stratigically placed rip in your appropriately worn jeans in the right place? etc?

See the type of club matters. So, it's good if you have the time to spend the night before drinking into the wee hours so you can wake up in the late afternoon of your club day, complaining about your hangover and stressed out about what to wear and how to coiff that night. These issues can take several hours to resolve with many bloody marys and alot of time destroying your closet. Once dressed and appropriately buzzed you usually have just enough time to make it to the bar for pre-clubbing drinks. This is an important step as it gives you time to catch up with friend's complaints. Complaining and dancing well are major clubber skills.

Once at the club there will be a long, slow moving line( to give you time to feel anxious and annoyed)at the end of which you will pay a cover charge. Inside, the better you tip the bartender, the stronger your drinks will be...

I'm being totally facetious, of course. Clubbing, the bright lights, the energy, the release of dancing til you're all sweaty and relaxed and happy w/ your endorphins all zapping around in there, being with friends and feeling close and young and pretty, it's all good. I think I'm just old and bitter. The thing about the bartender is true however...
