The point isn't about 'controlling happiness'.
The point is that IF we grant that you would be happier in the 'greatest happiness machine' (and that is what you are having difficulty with) But IF it is given that we would be happier in the greatest happiness machine...
THEN do you think that everyone should hook up?
If you do think so then I guess that means that you think happiness is the most important thing.
If you do not think that people should hook up then that means that you think there are other things aside from happiness that are as important (if not more so).
Such things as living in the REAL world. Making REAL decisions (instead of the illusion of choice). Having REAL corrective experiences (not just the illusion of them) or whatever.
That was the point...
Just another way to think about what is important to you.
Most people start out by thinking happiness is the most important thing...
And end up concluding that other things are also important to them...
But different people come to different conclusions about what is important to them.
