Gourd Rattles

Anyone ever make gourd rattles? Am trying to do this right now. Am baking them in an oven to dry them out (I live in a colder climate, and don't want to wait a year for them to dry outside.) Anyone have any tips on oven baking or rattle basics? For whatever reason, my gourds turned black (am realizing now this sounds really strange). I think it's cause my oven is evil and likes to burn things. Are black gourds normal from baking?
