I had always heard marmite was a yeast extract, made from the sludge left in the bottom of the beer casks from the aging process. It's very rich in the B vitamins.
It's great on toast, but I sometimes just grab me a fingerful out of the jar.
Marmite is English. Vegemite is Australian (right?). They are similar in taste to the uninitiated, but different to someone that grew up with one of them.
