I am so sympathetic to you and your brother.
The eccentric/off center you mention I understand well. That pretty much describes me.
I am capable of functioning in "normal" society for brief periods of time, depending on the circumstances, my med efficacy, my current psychological state, what's happening behind the scenes with me, but I mostly spend my time out in the boonies where I live.
My animals and my son are my everyday life. I was suicidal in society.
For your peace of mind and your brother's future, I hope he manages to get effective help so he can get through and beyond the college life and into a place where he can be, and be left alone or not as he pleases.
