I've had "common Law" for 17years and it still is good.
The only hitch is when your spouses health is involved. Marriage has built in agreements. "Common Law" does not. So if my partner became ill I would have no rights. I couldn't be with him in the hospital or make decisions about surgery etc...

We were both married before and that was complicated and expensive to get out of.

Now I would boycot marriage because Gay people can't have the same rights. What a funny democracy...rights for some people some of the time and others none for most of the time.
